Hans Purrmann (1880-1966) was one of the leading German artists in the first half of the 20th century. He studied with Franz von Stuck in Munich, but first discovered his own palette in Paris when he undertook a lively exploration of the works of Henri Matisse and Paul Cézanne. After other sojourns in Berlin and Florence, where he was head of the Villa Romana, the artists' house, in the 1930s, Purrmann was a neighbor of Hermann Hesse's in Montagnola in Ticino after 1943. The catalogue of drawings completes the scientific compilation of his oeuvre, with more than 1200 drawings having been documented for it. Of note are the many nudes that he drew at the Académie Matisse in Paris. Purrmann preferred pencil, ink, or charcoal, while colored chalk drawings are more rare. Also striking is his tendency to use high-quality rag paper with elaborate watermarks. The artist considered the drawing an autonomous work of art, and thus it becomes a collector's item.

A pocket-size introduction to the great twentieth-century German painter. Hans Purrmann (1880-1966) is among the most important painters in the history of twentieth-century art. His use of vibrant color drew on the works of Henri Matisse, with whom he was friends, and Paul Cézanne, but he achieved independent international acclaim over the course of an eventful life lived in Munich, Paris, Berlin, Florence, and Switzerland. With irrepressible curiosity, attentiveness, and an unerring eye for the beauty of the primal and essential, he produced works that pushed the bounds of representational painting. In 1955 Purrmann was included in the first documenta exhibit in Kassel, established to reconnect West Germany to the international art scene after World War II and to showcase art that had been deemed "degenerate" by the Nazi regime. In 1962 he was the subject of a major retrospective at the Haus der Kunst in Munich and was hailed by the press as a sensation. Based on new sources, this book presents the life and work of Hans Purrmann and situates the painter as a prominent protagonist in twentieth-century art history.

Hans Purrmann (1880-1966) insisted on the decorative qualities of the painting throughout his life. With the ambitious exhibition The Vitality of Colour, works by one of Germany's significant modernist artists are being shown in Denmark for the first time. Colourful landscapes, still lifes executed with heavy brush strokes, azure-coloured walls, and the relations between light, hue, and colour in paintings of interior, harmonious colour contrasts, decorative nude studies, and portraits are some of the works ... at the exhibition. The exhibition is a retrospective of Purrmann's works, connecting them with a selection of the artists whom he collaborated with or was inspired by--artists such as Max Liebermann, Henri Matisse, Mathilde Vollmoeller, Oskar and Marg Moll, Emy Roeder, as well as the writer Hermann Hesse, all of whom may also be experienced in the exhibition. --GL STRAND website.

A student--and later close friend--of Henri Matisse, German artist Hans Purrmann, born in 1880, is illuminated in this long-overdue catalogue raisonné, which focuses on the artist's impressive oeuvre of watercolors and gouaches and contains more than 400 catalogued works from his student days through 1965--one year before his death. Purrmann's friendship with Matisse and his deep exploration of Paul Cézanne's work had a marked influence on his own art and writing. Like members of the German Expressionist group Die Brücke, Purrmann reinvigorated the use of watercolor as a primary medium; during the 1920s and 30s, he was one of the most accomplished watercolorists in Germany. In his later years, Purrmann traveled through Italy, creating many of his landscape masterworks. Notable among these is a series of breathtaking and fragile works on paper that were produced in Levanto in the 1960s.
