Madeira
Revolutionary War veterans began buying land in the Madeira area in the 1790s. Family farms and orchards blossomed throughout the rural landscape for the first six decades. The coming of the Marietta and Cincinnati Railroad and establishment of a freight station in 1866 precipitated the communitys creation and gave it the name Madeira, chosen for the surname of the rail lines treasurer. Public schools, churches, and small businesses developed to serve a flourishing new population. Madeira incorporated in 1910, and citizens began a century of hard work, service, and neighborliness that makes the official motto of friendly town especially apt. Images contributed by the Madeira Historical Society, community groups, and residents provide insights into the communitys rich history and enduring charm.
China's Christianity
Among the assumptions interrogated in this volume, edited by Anthony E. Clark, is if Christianity should most accurately be identified as “Chinese” when it displays vestiges of Chinese cultural aesthetics, or whether Chinese Christianity is more indigenous when it is allowed to form its own theological framework. In other words, can theological uniqueness also function as a legitimate Chinese Christian cultural expression in the formation of its own ecclesial identity? Also central to what is explored in this book is how missionary influences, consciously or unconsciously, introduced seeds of independence into the cultural ethos of China’s Christian community. Chinese girls who pushed “the limits of proper behaviour,” for example, added to the larger sense of confidence as China’s Christians began to resist the model of Christianity they had inherited from foreign missionaries. SpecLab
Nearly a decade ago, Johanna Drucker cofounded the University of Virginia’s SpecLab, a digital humanities laboratory dedicated to risky projects with serious aims. In SpecLab she explores the implications of these radical efforts to use critical practices and aesthetic principles against the authority of technology based on analytic models of knowledge. Inspired by the imaginative frontiers of graphic arts and experimental literature and the technical possibilities of computation and information management, the projects Drucker engages range from Subjective Meteorology to Artists’ Books Online to the as yet unrealized ’Patacritical Demon, an interactive tool for exposing the structures that underlie our interpretations of text. Illuminating the kind of future such experiments could enable, SpecLab functions as more than a set of case studies at the intersection of computers and humanistic inquiry. It also exemplifies Drucker’s contention that humanists must play a role in designing models of knowledge for the digital age—models that will determine how our culture will function in years to come.
