Pakistan is about to play a pivotal role in global politics. Serving as a gateway to the Middle East and a conduit to Central and South Asia, it will be a crucial partner as the United States contends with China’s rise as an emerging global superpower and seeks to maintain its hegemony in the region. The problem is, for many people in the West, Pakistan is somewhat of a black box, with few Westerners understanding the country’s complex history and current political reality. The Political Ecology of Pakistan aims to change this by outlining the geopolitical history of Pakistan since the country gained independence in 1947, focusing in particular on the military’s ongoing role in state a...

Addiction to Religion

After the Second World War, in the 1950s and beyond, we embraced revolutionary emancipation of women, among other things, which led to an unprecedented sexual and cultural revolution, especially in the West. We discarded some of the old ways of doing things, and we opened the door to a brand-new and modern civilization in the 1960s, 1970s, and early 1980s. The sexual and cultural revolution led us to secularism, which challenged many draconian mores, including those in Muslim countries such as Pakistan, Malaysia, Turkey, Iran, Tunisia, and Morocco. That was when I published one of my books, Sociology of Religion: Changing Conceptions in the Structure of Islam. However, in relatively recent t...

Intimation of Revolution

Intimation of Revolution studies the rise of Bengali nationalism in East Pakistan in the 1950s and 60s by showcasing the interactions between global politics and local social and economic developments. It argues that the revolution of 1969 and the national liberation struggle of 1971 were informed by the 'global sixties' that transformed the political landscape of Pakistan and facilitated the birth of Bangladesh. Departing from the typical understanding of the Bangladesh as a product of Indo-Pakistani diplomatic and military rivalry, it narrates how Bengali nationalists resisted the processes of internal colonization by the Pakistani military bureaucratic regime to fashion their own nation. It details how this process of resistance and nation-formation drew on contemporaneous decolonization movements in Asia, Africa, and Latin America while also being shaped by the Cold War rivalries between the USA, USSR, and China.

The Post-Colonial State in the Era of Capitalist Globalization

State formation in post-colonial societies differed greatly from the formation of the Western capitalist state. The latter has been extensively studied, while a coherent grasp of the post-colonial state has remained elusive. Amin-Khan provides a critical historical and contemporary understanding of post-colonial state formations in Asia and Africa, and suggests how this process differed from the formation of states in Latin America. In distinguishing between the post-colonial state and the Western capitalist state, the author argues that the unitary colonial state left a strong legacy on the decolonized states of Asia and Africa, reinscribing their subordination vis-à-vis Western states, tr...
