The First World War

In a compact but comprehensive and clear narrative, this book explores the First World War from a genuinely global perspective. Putting a human face on the war, William Kelleher Storey brings to life individual decisions and experiences as well as environmental and technological factors such as food, geography, manpower, and weapons. Without neglecting traditional themes, the author's deft interweaving of the role of environment and technology enriches our understanding of the social, political, and military history of the war, not only in Europe, but throughout the world.

The Idea of Idolatry and the Emergence of Islam

Why and under what circumstances did the religion of Islam emerge in a remote part of Arabia at the beginning of the seventh century? Traditional scholarship maintains that Islam developed in opposition to the idolatrous and polytheistic religion of the Arabs of Mecca and the surrounding regions. In this study of pre-Islamic Arabian religion, G. R. Hawting adopts a comparative religious perspective to suggest an alternative view. By examining the various bodies of evidence which survive from this period, the Koran and the vast resources of the Islamic tradition, the author argues that in fact Islam arose out of conflict with other monotheists whose beliefs and practices were judged to fall short of true monotheism and were, in consequence, attacked polemically as idolatry. The author is adept at unravelling the complexities of the source material, and students and scholars will find his argument both engaging and persuasive.

The "Introduction to Altaic Linguistics" is designed as a manual for university students. The first part gives a survey of the Altaic languages, i.e., Mongolian, Manchu-Tungus, Chuvash-Turkic and Korean, and a classification of the Altaic languages and classifications of languages within each family. The second part presents a brief outline of the history of studying Altaic linguistics. It also contains a number of bibliographical data and bibliographies of famous scholars. The third part gives a brief history of the Altaic theory. The subsequent portions of the book deal with problems of mutual influences of the Altaic languages (e.g., the Turkic influence of Mongolian), Altaic influences in non-Altaic languages (e.g., the Turkic influence on Sayan-Samoyed, or Mari), non-Altaic influences in Altaic languages (e.g. Sogdian elements in Turkic), and structural features common to all Altaic languages.
