Heinrich Von Treitschke (Classic Reprint)

Excerpt from Heinrich Von Treitschke The shortcomings of this book are caused by the difficulty of condensing the vast and complex subject matter within the scope of a few short chapters, and by the writer's inability to devote a great deal of time to its production. I have to express my indebtedness to Professor Carruthers, of the University of Toronto, and to J. Charlton Hipkins, Esq., m.a., for their kind assistance in reading the proofs. Thanks are due to Mr. F. Law rence, Barrister, of Lincoln's Inn, for translating some extracts; and acknowledgments must be made to Messrs. Allen and Unwin for a few passages taken from their book Heinrich von Treitschke and H is Work. For the guidance o...

Heinrich Von Treitschke (1834-1896) was a prolific German historian and political writer during the nineteenth century. An ardent admirer of Prussianism, Treitschke was also deeply anti-Semitic and anti-socialist. This translation by Eden and Cedar Paul of The Origins of Prussianism, published in 1942 and reissued in 1969, made Treitschke’s 1862 classic essay available in English for the first time. It is a fascinating account of the thirteenth-century colonization of Old Prussia by the Teutonic Knights and the unification of Germany, which highlights his most prominent beliefs in the value of the State and the superiority of the German race. Treitschke’s essay will fascinate anyone with an interest in the history of Old Prussia and nineteenth-century German politics and academic thought.

Excerpt from Selections From Treitschke's Lectures on Politics Heinrich von Treitschke was born in 1834 at Dresden, the son of a Saxon general of Bohemian origin. From 1858 to 1863 he lectured on history at Leipzig; from 1863 to 1866 he was professor at Freiburg. After a short period of activity at Kiel, he was in Heidelberg till 1874, when he went to Berlin, where he remained till his death in 1896. The lectures on politics, from which the following selections were made, were delivered at Berlin University. Their general tenor is apparent from the extracts here given; their great popularity in Berlin and their tremendous influence on German thought is vividly described in "Germany and Engla...
