Differential Equations and Mathematical Physics: Proceedings of the International Conference held at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, March 15-21, 1990
This volume contains the proceedings of the 1999 International Conference on Differential Equations and Mathematical Physics. The contributions selected for this volume represent some of the most important presentations by scholars from around the world on developments in this area of research. The papers cover topics in the general area of linear and nonlinear differential equations and their relation to mathematical physics, such as multiparticle Schrödinger operators, stability of matter, relativity theory, fluid dynamics, spectral and scattering theory including inverse problems. Titles in this series are co-published with International Press, Cambridge, MA.
A mathematically consistent formulation of relativistic quantum electrodynamics (QED) has still to be found. Nevertheless, there are several simplified effective models that successfully describe many body quantum systems and the interaction of radiation with matter. Large Coulomb Systems explores a selection of mathematical topics inspired by QED. It comprises selected, expanded and edited lectures given by international experts at a topical summer school.
This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications QUASICLASSICAL METHODS is based on the proceedings of a very successful one-week workshop with the same title, which was an integral part of the 1994-1995 IMA program on "Waves and Scattering." 200 mathematicians from four continents attended the conference of Differential Equations and Mathematical Physics in Alabama, USA. Among the fields discussed were ordinary, partial, intergrated and non-linear differential equations and their applications to mathematical physics.
This invaluable book presents reviews of some recent topics in the theory of Schrdinger operators. It includes a short introduction to the subject, a survey of the theory of the Schrdinger equation when the potential depends on the time periodically, an introduction to the so-called FBI transformation (also known as coherent state expansion) with application to the semi-classical limit of the S-matrix, an overview of inverse spectral and scattering problems, and a study of the ground state of the Pauli-Fierz model with the use of the functional integral. The material is accessible to graduate students and non-expert researchers.
This volume is based on the talks given at the Workshop on Infinity and Truth held at the Institute for Mathematical Sciences, National University of Singapore, from 25 to 29 July 2011. The chapters cover topics in mathematical and philosophical logic that examine various aspects of the foundations of mathematics. The theme of the volume focuses on two basic foundational questions: (i) What is the nature of mathematical truth and how does one resolve questions that are formally unsolvable within the Zermelo-Fraenkel Set Theory with the Axiom of Choice, and (ii) Do the discoveries in mathematics provide evidence favoring one philosophical view over others? These issues are discussed from the vantage point of recent progress in foundational studies.The final chapter features questions proposed by the participants of the Workshop that will drive foundational research. This volume is to pique the interest of many researchers in the fields of infinite dimensional analysis and quantum probability. These fields have undergone increasingly significant developments and have found many new applications, in particular, to classical probability and to different branches of physics. These fields are rather wide and are of a strongly interdisciplinary nature. For such a purpose, we strove to bridge among these interdisciplinary fields in our Workshop on IDAQP and their Applications that was held at the Institute for Mathematical Sciences, National University of Singapore from 3-7 March 2014. The contents in this volume are based on the program Sets and Computations that was held at the Institute for Mathematical Sciences, National University of Singapore from 30 March until 30 April 2015. This special collection reports on important and recent interactions between the fields of Set Theory and Computation Theory. This includes the new research areas of computational complexity in set theory, randomness beyond the hyperarithmetic, powerful extensions of Goodstein's theorem and the capturing of large fragments of set theory via elementary-recursive structures.Further chapters are concerned with central topics within Set Theory, including cardinal characteristics, Fraïssé limits, the set-generic multiverse and the study of ideals. Also Computation Theory, which includes computable group theory and measure-theoretic aspects of Hilbert's Tenth Problem.
