The Farming and Memorandum Books of Henry Best of Elmswell, 1642
In the early 1640s Henry Best, a gentleman farmer of Elmswell in the East Riding of Yorkshire, composed an account of his farming practices. The resulting Farming Book provides a unique account of seventeenth-century farming, of the marketing of agricultural produce, and of rural customs. It is here published in a new transcription by Donald Woodward. In addition, a complete transcript of Henry Best's Memorandum Book is published for the first time; this volume gives details of a wide range of day-to-day transactions mainly during the period 1617 to 1645. The editor adds greatly to our knowledge of Henry Best, his family and estate in a substantial introduction, and much ancillary documentary evidence is provided in a series of appendices. The volume is rounded off by an extensive new glossary prepared by Peter McClure.

Cyril McNeile was born on 28th September 1888, in Bodmin, Cornwall. McNeile's writing career began in 1915 when the Daily Mail serialised Reminiscences of Sergeant Michael Cassidy. He wrote under the pseudonym "Sapper" due to British Army personnel being barred from publishing under their real names. McNeile's most famous creation was that of Bull-Dog Drummond in 1920. Drummond was an ex-army captain with a thirst for adventure and defeating bad guys.

O. Henry was an Amercian writer who was a master of the short story genre. His stories were known for their wit, wordplay, and for having an unexpected twist at the end.He was famous for his warm characterizations of awkward and difficult situations and the creative ways people find to resolve them. His most famous short story, The Gift of the Magi, epitomizes this style. O. Henry was born William Sydney Porter. He started writing stories while serving a prison sentence and published his first twelve stories while still in prison. In order to keep his real identity private, he took on the pseudonym of O. Henry, which he maintained throughout his writing career. Though he died at the age of just 48, he had written more than 600 stories by then.
