One of the recent problems in theoretical physics is that the glamorous new string theory is just too elegant, too sublime, to associate with sloppy old reality. Some progress has been made at making string theory compatible with other theories--quantum gravity and conventional field theory--but it is unclear how to verify and examine the conjugation experimentally. The ten papers here struggle with the mechanics of applying theory to practice. Courtney The life, times, and character of one of the most elusive gangsters of the 1930's era, who survived by going straight after prison and becoming an upstanding citizen. Based upon the author's month-long museum exhibit of Carl Janaway's possessions and story, which filled the John Vaughn Library lobby at Northeastern State University. Famous Sheriff Grover Bishop, who killed more men (17) than Wyatt Earp, chased Carl Janaway over 3,000 miles, and couldn't catch him. Carl's wife was also a bank robber, called the "Blonde Bandit", of rough and rowdy Vian, Oklahoma. Janaway spent time in Alcatraz Prison with some of the deadliest gangsters of the time.

The Physics of the Early Universe
The Physics of the Early Universe is an edited and expanded version of the lectures given at a recent summer school of the same name. Its aim is to present an advanced multi-authored textbook that meets the needs of both postgraduate students and young researchers interested in, or already working on, problems in cosmology and general relativity, with emphasis on the early universe. A particularly strong feature of the present work is the constructive-critical approach to the present mainstream theories, the careful assessment of some alternative approaches, and the overall balance between theoretical and observational considerations. As such, this book will also benefit experienced scientists and nonspecialists from related areas of research.
The First International Conference on String Phenomenology
String phenomenology offers a bridge between the excitement and novelty that typified theoretical physics in recent years and experimental reality. The First International Conference on String Phenomenology concentrated on cosmological and phenomenologically oriented applications of string theory. The aim was to bring together experimental and theoretical physicists to discuss the triumphs and challenges that high energy physics faces in its attempt to uncover the next layers of fundamental matter and interactions. The main theme was the application of string theory, but the conference also accommodated alternative approaches to physics beyond the Standard Model.
