Sensory systems play important roles in inducing a variety of responses that are critical to the survival of individuals and species. Neural circuits are generated by a combination of activity dependent and independent processes. The basic architecture of sensory systems is built before birth based on a genetic program. However, the neural maps and circuits are further refined after birth in an activity-dependent manner. If the system is left unstimulated in neonates, its function is permanently impaired and cannot be recovered even when it is stimulated after the critical period.
This book summarizes recent advances in understanding of the mammalian and fish olfactory system and provides perspective on the translation of external odor information into appropriate motivational and behavioral responses. Following the discovery of the odorant receptor gene family in 1991, understanding of the basic biological mechanisms of the olfactory system has advanced enormously. The two-volume set LNCS 6468-6469 contains the carefully selected and reviewed papers presented at the eight workshops that were held in conjunction with the 10th Asian Conference on Computer Vision, in Queenstown, New Zealand, in November 2010. From a total of 167 submissions to all workshops, 89 papers were selected for publication.
