Intelligent Systems and Robotics focuses on new developments in robotics and intelligent systems and provides insight, guidance and specific techniques vital to those concerned with the design and implementation of robotics and intelligent system applications. Intelligent Systems and Robotics presents information on a 3-D vision for robots and intelligent control of a vision-based reasoning system with a robot manipulator. The reader will find authoritative presentations on autonomous land vehicle navigation, manipulator reachable workspace problems and the formulation of algorithms for their solution. Covered are methods for medical applications utilizing expert adaptive control, the integrated piezoelectric sensor/actuator design for distributed identification and control of smart machines, including theory, experiments, finite element formulation and analysis. Automatic repair of aircraft transparencies and geometric modeling utilized in robot task planning as well as the evaluation of standard fieldbus networks utilized in the factory environment are presented.

Nonlinear Science And Complexity - Proceedings Of The Conference

This volume provides useful tools in Lie group analysis to solve nonlinear partial differential equations. Many of important issues in nonlinear wave dynamics and nonlinear fluid mechanics are presented: Homotopy techniques are used to obtain analytical solutions; fundamental problems and theories in classic and quantum dynamical systems are discussed; and numerous interesting results about dynamics and vibration in sensor and smart systems are presented. Interval computation and nonlinear modeling in dynamics and control are also briefly included.

Safety Evaluation Based on Identification Approaches Related to Time-Variant and Nonlinear Structures

Safety evaluation by definition involves many complex factors and thus covers a wide range of topics. In order to focus the content of the workshop the subject matter was specific to the state of the art and the recent developments in nonlinear and time-variant methods employing identification procedures. Participants in the workshop represented a wide range of expertise. They were se lected in order to cover the state of the art of knowledge in fault-detection and dam age assessment, system identification, signal processing, mathematical and physical modelling and applications of techniques such as fuzzy logic and neural networks. The emphasis was placed on the exploitation and understandin...

Design-Oriented Analysis of Structures

This book was developed while I was teaching graduate courses on analysis, design and optimization of structures, in the United States, Europe and Israel. Structural analysis is a main part of any design problem, and the analysis often must be repeated many times during the design process. Much work has been done on design-oriented analysis of structures recently and many studies have been published. The purpose of the book is to collect together selected topics of this literature and to present them in a unified approach. It meets the need for a general text covering the basic concepts and methods as well as recent developments in this area. This should prove useful to students, researchers...

IUTAM Symposium on Mechanical and Electromagnetic Waves in Structured Media

The IUTAM Symposium on Mechanical and Electromagnetic Waves in Structured Media took place at the University of Sydney from January 18- 22, 1999. It brought together leading researchers from eleven countries for a week-long meeting, with the aim of providing cross-links between the com- nities studying related problems involving elastic and electromagnetic waves in structured materials. After the meeting, participants were invited to submit articles based on their presentations, which were refereed and assembled to constitute these Proceedings. The topics covered here represent areas at the forefront of research intoelastic and electromagnetic waves. They include effect of nonlinearity, diff...

Coupling of Fluids, Structures and Waves in Aeronautics

This volume contains the proceedings of a workshop held in Melbourne, Australia, entitled "Coupling of Fluids, Structures and Waves in Aeronautics". The 22 papers deal with new computational methods for multi-disciplinary design in aeronautics. They are grouped into chapters on fluids, structures, electromagnetics, optimisation, mathematical methods and tools, and aircraft design. Several papers treat coupling of these themes in a multi-physics setting. Included is a 17-page report of a Round Table discussion entitled "Future Tools for Design and Manufacture of Innovative Products in the Aeronautics Industry", together with a summary of important themes and issues. This research promotes the advanced technologies necessary for continued development of efficient and environmentally sustainable transport systems.

Functional Analysis

This book started its life as a series of lectures given by the second author from the 1970’s onwards to students in their third and fourth years in the Department of Mechanics and Mathematics at Rostov State University. For these lectures there was also an audience of engineers and applied mechanicists who wished to understand the functional analysis used in contemporary research in their fields. These people were not so much interested in functional analysis itself as in its applications; they did not want to be told about functional analysis in its most abstract form, but wanted a guided tour through those parts of the analysis needed for their applications. The lecture notes evolved ov...

IUTAM Symposium on Segregation in Granular Flows

IUTAM Symposium on Segregation in Granular Flows

Segregation is a pervasive phenomenon whereby a flowing granular mass consisting of particles with diverse physical properties becomes spatially inhomogeneous. In the industrial sector that deals with the handling and processing of bulk solids, this non-uniformity is highly undesirable since blend homogeneity is generally a stringent requirement of most products. In the arena of geophysical flows, segregation can enhance the destructive capabilities of natural events such as avalanches and landslides. During the last 15 years, these issues have provided motivation and fostered collaborations between the communities of mathematicians, engineers, industrial researchers, and physicists to develop predictive models of segregation by integrating the perspectives and approaches of each. The collection of unique papers brings to light many of the perplexing scientific and technical issues in our current understanding of this complex phenomenon. It addresses advances in experiment, computational modeling and theory. This volume is one of the very few books devoted entirely to problems of segregation of particulate solids.

IUTAM Symposium on Synthesis in Bio Solid Mechanics

This book contains the edited version of invited lectures presented at the IUTAM-Sym- sium Synthesis in Bio Solid Mechanics, held at Hotel Frederiksdal, Virum (Copenhagen), Denmark, May 24 to May 27, 1998. The symposium was attended by 48 scientist from 14 countries. Biomechanics has been a very active research area in the last 25 years and covers a very broad class of problems. The present symposium concentrated on the solid mechanics - main of biomechanics, where important problems of synthesis presently are an active and challenging part. Characteristics of biomechanical materials are not only the inhomogeneity and anisotropy, but also the capability to change in relation to actual use. T...

IUTAM Symposium on Size Effects on Material and Structural Behavior at Micron- and Nano-Scales

This volume is a collection of twenty five written contributions by distinguished invited speakers from seven countries to the IUTAM Symposium on Size Effects on Material and Structural Behavior at Micron- and Nano-scales. Size effects on material and structural behaviors are of great interest to physicists, material scientists, and engineers who need to understand and model the mechanical behavior of solids especially at micron- and nano-scales.
