Berdasarkan pandangan ini maka sejarah pendidikan dapat ditulis mulai dari adanya manusia. Pada bab ini penulis membatasi pembahasan hanya pada tiga periode sejarah pendidikan yang paling penting untuk diketahui oleh para mahasiswa fakultas pendidikan khusunya di Indonesia, yaitu: (1) sejarah pendidikan dunia pada masa kuno; (2) sejarah pendidikan Barat, dan; (3) sejarah pendidikan Indonesia.
