The material provides an historical background to forecasting developments as well as introducing recent advances. The book will be of interest to both mathematicians and physicians, the topics covered include equations of dynamical meteorology, first integrals, non-linear stability, well-posedness of boundary problems, non-smooth solutions, parameters and free oscillations, meteorological data processing, methods of approximation and interpolation and numerical methods for forecast modelling.

Statistical Mechanics

Statistical Mechanics

This classic book marks the beginning of an era of vigorous mathematical progress in equilibrium statistical mechanics. Its treatment of the infinite system limit has not been superseded, and the discussion of thermodynamic functions and states remains basic for more recent work. The conceptual foundation provided by the Rigorous Results remains invaluable for the study of the spectacular developments of statistical mechanics in the second half of the 20th century.

Order and Chaos in Nonlinear Physical Systems

This volume is concerned with the theoretical description of patterns and instabilities and their relevance to physics, chemistry, and biology. More specifically, the theme of the work is the theory of nonlinear physical systems with emphasis on the mechanisms leading to the appearance of regular patterns of ordered behavior and chaotic patterns of stochastic behavior. The aim is to present basic concepts and current problems from a variety of points of view. In spite of the emphasis on concepts, some effort has been made to bring together experimental observations and theoretical mechanisms to provide a basic understanding of the aspects of the behavior of nonlinear systems which have a mea...

Turbulence, Strange Attractors and Chaos

The present collection of reprints covers the main contributions of David Ruelle, and coauthors, to the theory of chaos and its applications. Several of the papers reproduced here are classics in the field. Others (that were published in less accessible places) may still surprise the reader. The collection contains mathematical articles relevant to chaos, specific articles on the theory, and articles on applications to hydrodynamical turbulence, chemical oscillations, etc. A sound judgement of the value of techniques and applications is crucial in the interdisciplinary field of chaos. For a critical assessment of what has been achieved in this area, the present volume is an invaluable contri...

Quantum Dynamics: Models and Mathematics

The contributions to this volume deal with topics ranging over constructive and general quantum field theory and related algebraic problems, non-renormalizable models, equilibrium sta tistical mechanics, critical phenomena, and nonlinear equations modelling the onset of turbulence. They are based on lectures intended to provide the 1975/1976 research group "Mathematical Problems of Quantum Dynamics" at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF) of Bielefeld University with an input reflecting important recent develop ments and presented by leading experts in the pertinent fields of research. They further reflect a situation of unusually active and fruit ful exchange not. only between va...

The Mathematical Heritage of Henri Poincare

The Mathematical Heritage of Henri Poincare

On April 7-10, 1980, the American Mathematical Society sponsored a Symposium on the Mathematical Heritage of Henri Poincari, held at Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana. This volume presents the written versions of all but three of the invited talks presented at this Symposium (those by W. Browder, A. Jaffe, and J. Mather were not written up for publication). In addition, it contains two papers by invited speakers who were not able to attend, S. S. Chern and L. Nirenberg. If one traces the influence of Poincari through the major mathematical figures of the early and midtwentieth century, it is through American mathematicians as well as French that this influence flows, through G. D. Birkhoff, Solomon Lefschetz, and Marston Morse. This continuing tradition represents one of the major strands of American as well as world mathematics, and it is as a testimony to this tradition as an opening to the future creativity of mathematics that this volume is dedicated. This part contains sections on topological methods in nonlinear problems, mechanics and dynamical systems, ergodic theory and recurrence, and historical material.

Navier—Stokes Equations and Related Nonlinear Problems

This volume contains the Proceedings of the Third International Conference on Navier-Stokes Equations and Related Nonlinear Problems. The conference was held in Funchal (Madeira, Portugal), on May 21-27, 1994. In addition to the editor, the organizers were Carlos Albuquerque (FC, University of Lisbon), Casimiro Silva (University of Madeira) and Juha Videman (1ST, Technical University of Lisbon). This meeting, following two other successful events of similar type held in Thurnau (Germany) in 1992 and in Cento (Italy) in 1993, brought together, to the majestically beautiful island of Madeira, more than 60 specialists from all around the world, of which about two thirds were invited lecturers. ...
