Chemistry, Biological and Pharmacological Properties of Medicinal Plants from the Americas
This volume is a compilation of plenary lectures presented at the IOCD/CYTED Symposium held in Panama City, Panama in 1997, and covers different aspects of research into plants from North, South and Central America. The topics treated all revolve around the chemistry, pharmacology, and biology of these plants. Gender and the Politics of Office Work
This case-study of a fast-growing segment of the labor market examines the meaning of office work for women: their prolonged struggle to be admitted to the unions, the role of the Schoevers Institute—the Dutch Katharine Gibbs School—in shaping the occupation of secretary, the conservative backlash against female office workers between the two world wars, and finally, the way these women look back on their time in the office, including their experiences of sexual harassment. Ina Lohr (1903–1983)
Although almost forgotten today, Ina Lohr played a significant role in Basel's 20th-century musical world. In 1930, she became Paul Sacher's musical assistant, helping in the preparations for performances of the Basel Chamber Orchestra, of which he was the director. Just three years later, she was one of the courageous pioneers who under the direction of Paul Sacher founded the now internationally renowned Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. As Ina Lohr was instrumental in creating its program, her work indirectly had an enormous impact on the Early Music Movement. Through her biography, we learn to see Early Music within the complex cultural and religious matrix of her time, forcing ourselves to transcend our own boundaries to understand her life.
