The Mediterranean Passage
During the last two decades of the twentieth century, southern Europe became a key destination for global migration. Countries which had been important source countries for emigration, mainly to northern Europe, quickly became targets for international migrants coming from an extraordinary range of source countries. Today, the management of immigration is complex with countries torn between the need to satisfy the rules of Schengen and 'fortress Europe' on the one hand, and the economic benefits of cheap and flexible labour supplies on the other. This book brings together a variety of detailed studies recording the 'cultural encounters' of these migrants. Most of the chapters are based on detailed research in locations such as Lisbon, the Algarve, Barcelona, Turin, Bologna, Sicily and Athens, as well as in source countries such as Morocco, Tunisia, Albania and the Philippines. What emerges is a scenario diverse and rapidly evolving, with cultural encounters which are both enriching and depressing, yet always fascinating.

In this reference, Buffery and Marcer cover all of the areas historically inhabited by the Catalan people. These are, in order of size and population: Catalonia, which accounts for over half of the population of the Catalan-speaking areas; Valencia, with over a third; the Balearic Islands with just under 8 percent; and the Catalunya Nord, the Principality of Andorra, and the Catalan-speaking areas within Aragon, Murcia, and Alghero. Mediterranean Paradiplomacies
In Mediterranean Paradiplomacies: The Dynamics of Diplomatic Reterritorialization, Manuel Duran presents a new view on the phenomenon of paradiplomacy by analyzing the diplomatic activities of a number of Mediterranean substate entities as a site of political territorialization. The international agency of these substate entities is giving way to new patterns of territorialization, as well as alternative forms of diplomacy. Duran examines the diplomatic activities of two Spanish, two French and two Italian regions. The book poses the question of why and how these regions operate diplomatically in a given territorial milieu and convincingly elucidates the particular patterns of reterritorialization that result from these diplomatic activities.

Health and Social Services Among International Labor Migrants
The contributors to this volume, representing a wide variety of disciplines (including medicine, social work, political science, sociology, anthropology, psychology, and biology), are in agreement that the health and human services offered in industrial nations are generally monocultural, and not well suited for migrants from other cultures. One article even arrives at the disquieting conclusion that the mental health services offered to immigrants not only do not respond to their needs, but rather serve to reinforce negative perceptions regarding immigrants from third-world countries. This book represents a timely and urgently needed contribution to the discourse on health services for migrants. It demonstrates that the issues and problems of immigration in the United States and Europe have many commonalities, and that much can be learned from examining the experiences, successes, and failures of both.
