Phase Transitions and Relaxation in Systems with Competing Energy Scales
Systems with competing energy scales are widespread and exhibit rich and subtle behaviour, although their systematic study is a relatively recent activity. This text presents lectures given at a NATO Advanced Study Institute reviewing the current knowledge and understanding of this fascinating subject, particularly with regard to phase transitions and dynamics, at an advanced tutorial level. Both general and specific aspects are considered, with competitions having several origins; differences in intrinsic interactions, interplay between intrinsic and extrinsic effects, such as geometry and disorder; irreversibility and non-equilibration. Among the specific physical application areas are supercooled liquids and glasses, high-temperature superconductors, flux or vortex pinning and motion, charge density waves, domain growth and coarsening, and electron solidification.

Physics of Biomaterials: Fluctuations, Selfassembly and Evolution
Recent years have seen a growing interest in and activity at the interface between physics and biology, with the realization that both subjects have a great deal to learn from and to teach to one another. Research Reactor Spent Fuel Management: Options and Support to Decision Making
This publication, resulting from an IAEA coordinated research project (CRP), provides information about available strategies for research reactor spent fuel management, and presents a decision methodology to assist those selecting among several options, to identify the preferred approach for their specific situation. The decision support tools were developed to consider not only the cost of the possible research reactor spent fuel management strategies, but also the non-economic factors that might influence their selection. Examples of the technologies that are currently used by some IAEA Member States are provided. Additionally, this publication provides information about the Excel based decision-support tools developed as part of this CRP, along with case studies and tutorials to assist users.

This is the seventh directory of research, development and demonstration projects carried out within the field of energy, and of energy-related subjects, in the Nordic countries. The directory incorporates projects in progress during 1989. 2209 projects, most of which are financed by special public funds, are described. In addition to projects concerning energy sources, energy utilization and energy conservation, the directory also includes descriptions of research on environmental, ecological and socioeconomic issues, etc., where these are related to the main subject. The directory thus provides direct access to topical information relevant to a very comprehensive field of research. In the appendices the organization of the Nordic Energy Research Programme, and of energy research in each Nordic country, is explained, and the content and uses of the Nordic data base, Nordic Energy Index, are described. Names of people to contact, addresses, telephone numbers and other useful information, can also be found in addition to details about newsletters providing information on current research in some of the Nordic countries.
