Membuat Alginat dari Rumput Laut Sargassum
Indonesia merupakan salah satu negara penghasil dan pengekspor rumput laut terbesar di dunia. Beberapa jenis rumput laut Indonesia bernilai ekonomis, bahkan sudah diperdagangkan ke negara lain. Namun demikian, beberapa spesies khususnya dari kelompok rumput laut cokelat penghasil alginat belum diusahakan secara optimal dan pemanfaatannya masih sangat rendah. Pemanfaatan alginat cukup luas, baik dalam industri pangan maupun nonpangan. Sampai saat ini penyediaan alginat di Indonesia masih diimpor dari negara lain. Alginat digunakan dalam industri pangan dan non pangan. Industri pangan misalnya, digunakan sebagai penstabil emulsi pada es krim, pensuspensi pada susu cokelat, dan pengatur kekentalan pada yoghurt dan saus. Pada industri non-pangan, alginat digunakan pada pasta pencapan (textile printing) sebagai pengental, pada industri kertas sebagai pengatur keseragaman dan kehalusan permukaan kertas.
