Playing It Well

Playing It Well, The Life and Times of Jack OLeary is a book in two parts about a man who was born into poverty who rose to become a successful Engineer, an elected and appointed government official and a much exhibited Photographic Artist. It starts with Part One and his birth in 1932 and his early days on the streets of New York, his misspent early years, and his later service in the Navy during the Korean War, after which he spent 35 years in the Aerospace Industry, helping to put a man on the moon while playing a key role in assuring the nations defense. It tells the story of the tragic loss of a wife and son and the subsequent remarriage and raising a family on Long Island. Part one ends with his introduction to New York politics when he is enlisted to seek the Conservative Party nomination to run for Governor of the State of New York in 1966 leading to his eventual elevation to the highest levels of party leadership on Long Island in 1972. Part Two follows Jacks adventures through the end of the twentieth century to the early years of the twenty first.

On Fire

At nine, O'Leary survived a house fire with burns on 100 percent of his body. Doctors didn't expect him to make it through the night. But he made it through five months of healing in the hospital, and years of excruciating rehabilitation as he struggled to regain mobility and control of his body. O'Leary says that it changed him for the better-- and that if he had it to do all over again, he wouldn't change a thing. Now he shares reflections on the seven life-giving choices he made that ensured his survival and his ability to ignite a radically inspired life. -- adapted from jacket

Strengths of the Social Safety Net in the Great Recession

The contributors in this book use administrative data from six states from before, during, and after the Great Recession to gauge the degree to which Supplemental Nutrition Assistance (SNAP) and Unemployment Insurance (UI) interacted. They also recommend ways that the program policies could be altered to better serve those suffering hardship as a result of future economic downturns.

The Complete Prefaces: 1914-1929

"This is Volume II, covering the years 1914-29, of a three-part edition, which will be the first to bring together all of Shaw's prefaces (several hitherto unpublished). They are assembled chronologically and are provided with annotation of elusive topical references, through the meticulous but judicious editing of Dan H. Laurence and Daniel J. Leary." "The prodigious range of subjects - children's rights, creative evolution, capital punishment, blood sport, the nature of sainthood, the Irish question - remains as topical as this morning's newspaper columns. Shaw's concerns about human possibilities, and the greed, insularity and blindness that obstruct those possibilities, are as applicable...
