Best Practice Guide on the Control of Arsenic in Drinking Water

Arsenic in drinking water derived from groundwater is arguably the biggest environmental chemical human health risk known at the present time, with well over 100,000,000 people around the world being exposed. Monitoring the hazard, assessing exposure and health risks and implementing effective remediation are therefore key tasks for organisations and individuals with responsibilities related to the supply of safe, clean drinking water. Best Practice Guide on the Control of Arsenic in Drinking Water, covering aspects of hazard distribution, exposure, health impacts, biomonitoring and remediation, including social and economic issues, is therefore a very timely contribution to disseminating us...

Porous media are broadly found in nature and their study is of high relevance in our present lives. In geosciences porous media research is fundamental in applications to aquifers, mineral mines, contaminant transport, soil remediation, waste storage, oil recovery and geothermal energy deposits. Despite their importance, there is as yet no complete

Water Matters: Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals presents a compilation of water scenarios and their relationship to multiple facets of life, as water forms a nexus with food security and energy resources, thereby forming one of the fundamental pillars of sustainable development. The thematic topics focus on studies of achieving individual sustainable development goals, primarily on safe and sustainable drinking water availability, the role of water in sanitation, transboundary water, and water in the ecosystem. Each chapter presents a case study to enable a holistic review of the topic and provide insight for further research. Water Matters: Achieving the Sustainable Development G...

The world according to zebrafish: How neural circuits generate behaviour

Understanding how the brain functions is one of the most ambitious current scientific goals. This challenge will only be accomplish by a multidisciplinary approach involving genetics, molecular biology, optics, ethology, neurobiology and mathematics and using tractable model systems. The zebrafish larva is a transparent genetically tractable small vertebrate, ideal for the combination state-of-the- art imaging techniques (e.g. two-photon scanning microscopy, single-plane illumination microscopy, spatial light modulator microscopy and lightfield microscopy), bioluminiscence and optogenetics to monitor and manipulate neuronal activity from single specific neurons up to the entire brain, in an intact behaving organism. Furthermore, the zebrafish model offers large and increasing collection of mutant and transgenic lines modelling human brain diseases. With these advantages in hand, the zebrafish larva became in the recent years, a novel animal model to study neuronal circuits and behaviour, taking us closer than ever before to understand how the brain controls behaviour.

Fossil and Recent Biofilms

This textbook on biofilms combines knowledge on sub-aquatic and sub-aerial biofilms and their products (stromatolites, oolites, ore, petroleum and gas deposits). It describes how formation and degradation of minerals and rocks is achieved through biofilm formation on and in sediments, soils and rocks. Methods of study, examples of Precambrian biofilms of an early Earth as well as the most recent examples of desert rock biofilms are treated in this integrative book on biofilms, microbial mats and stromatolites.

Advances in Subsurface Contamination of Porous Media: Indicators, Processes and Modelling provides a high level understanding of the processes concerning common and emergent contaminants through their passage from soil to groundwater. The book presents new methodologies and indicators to reach a better understanding of biogeochemical processes as a basis for environmental models. The combined use of the understanding of processes and models’ prognosis will inform researches and water managers and will provide the possibility for better management and preservation of water resources. The book will be a valuable reference for graduate students, researchers and professionals in government and public institutions, and for those interested in soil and groundwater contamination in various aspects.

Medical Geology

Medical Geology The key to understanding the relationship between the geological environment and human health Medical geology deals with of the impact of environmental factors on the health of individual human beings and communities. In particular, it studies environmental exposure to both macro- and micronutrients in the geosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere—respectively, soil, water, and airborne dust—which may positively or negatively impact human growth, development, and overall health. The insights contributed by this burgeoning field can aid not only in individual medical cases, but also in assessing disproportionately impacted communities and addressing global medical inequality....
