Perspectives in Biotechnology

This book is the proceedings of a NATO Advanced Studies Institute organized jointly by LNETI, the National Laboratories of the Ministry of Industry of the Portuguese Government and The Institute for Biotechnological Studies in the UK. The ASI was held in 1985 on the beautiful peninsula of Troia, once the site of a flourishing Roman salt industry. The course was the first in the NATO "Double Jump Programme" specifically aimed to promote industrial and academic participation and cooperation. As such, contributions across the whole field of biotechnology were planned and the present volume represents perspectives from specialists in different areas. Biotechnology has been defined in a recent OECD publication as "the application of scientific and engineering principles to the processing of materials by biological agents to provide goods and services" and the contents of this book, which often describe research from interdisciplinary groups, reflect this title. The value of the ASI was further enhanced by many first class poster contributions from the participants.

Handbook of Proteolytic Enzymes

Extensively revised and updated, the new edition of the highly regarded Handbook of Proteolytic Enzymes is an essential reference for biochemists, biotechnologists and molecular biologists. Edited by world-renowned experts in the field, this comprehensive work provides detailed information on all known proteolytic enzymes to date. This two-volume set unveils new developments on proteolytic enzymes which are being investigatedin pharmaceutical research for such diseases as HIV, Hepatitis C, and the common cold. Volume I covers aspartic and metallo petidases while Volume II examines peptidases of cysteine, serine, threonine and unknown catalytic type. A CD-ROM accompanies the book containing f...

Focuses on combating bacterial pathogens by understanding their strategies of defense! Each chapter begins with a summary of concepts, so those not actively working in the field gain an overall picture of what follows! Highlights antibiotic resistance in pathogens that poses the greatest threat to human health! Containing nearly 2000 references for additional research, Bacterial Resistance to Antimicrobials discusses the ecology of drug resistance genes, acquired response, and selection in natural bacterial populations describes global response systems that are a basis of resistance details antibiotic modification, inactivation, and host target modification as means of resistance development...

Progress in Nucleic Acid Research and Molecular Biology

Praise for the Series"In perusing these chapters, I found much of interest. It is worth investigating."--P. Brickell in Biotechnology and Applied Biochemistry"Full of interst not only for the molecular biologist--for whom the numerous references will be invaluable--but will also appeal to a much wider circle of biologists, and in fact to all those who are concerned with the living cell."--British Medical Journal - Provides a forum for discussion of new discoveries, approaches, and ideas in molecular biology - Contributions from leaders in their fields - Abundant references

Class 3.4 Hydrolases I

The Springer Handbook of Enzymes provides concise data on some 5,000 enzymes sufficiently well characterized – and here is the second, updated edition. Their application in analytical, synthetic and biotechnology processes as well as in food industry, and for medicinal treatments is added. Data sheets are arranged in their EC-Number sequence. The new edition reflects considerable progress in enzymology: the total material has more than doubled, and the complete 2nd edition consists of 39 volumes plus Synonym Index. Starting in 2009, all newly classified enzymes are treated in Supplement Volumes.

The Roles of GnIH in Reproductive Function and Behavior

Since the discovery of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) at the beginning of 1970s, it has been believed that GnRH is the only hypothalamic neuropeptide that regulates gonadotropin release in vertebrates. In 2000, however, a novel hypothalamic neuropeptide that actively inhibits gonadotropin release was discovered in Japanese quail and termed gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone (GnIH). Following seventeen years of research has revealed that GnIH is highly conserved across vertebrates including humans, and GnIH is involved in a number of physiological and behavioral functions related to reproduction. The aim of this e-book is to celebrate the discovery of GnIH and the progress of GnIH research by collecting review and original articles from leading scientists in this new research field.

Amino Acids, Peptides and Proteins in Organic Chemistry, Building Blocks, Catalysis and Coupling Chemistry

This is the third of five books in the Amino Acids, Peptides and Proteins in Organic Synthesis series. Closing a gap in the literature, this is the only series to cover this important topic in organic and biochemistry. Drawing upon the combined expertise of the international "who's who" in amino acid research, these volumes represent a real benchmark for amino acid chemistry, providing a comprehensive discussion of the occurrence, uses and applications of amino acids and, by extension, their polymeric forms, peptides and proteins. The practical value of each volume is heightened by the inclusion of experimental procedures. The 5 volumes cover the following topics: Volume 1: Origins and Synth...
