An extra feature of this imposing paperback is the photograph of Jack Woodford's last typewriter on the front cover. There are two introductory pieces which are brief biographies of Jack, one short & one long, that firmly place Jack Woodford on the literary map. It has been said that Jack taught giants how to write & was read by geniuses. The backcover quotes amply prove that statement. Apparently Jack knew of or personally everybody in the literary scene. Although it is generally agreed that the famous how-to-write book TRIAL & ERROR was his best work there has always been some controversy over the subject. Some claim that HOW TO WRITE FOR MONEY was the best book or WHY WRITE A NOVEL. At any rate, with the appearance of the autobiography the arguments were over: this was his best book. In a long career that carried him to the heights of his profession to a dingy two-room apartment he saw it all. If that wasn't enough, a year in a Federal Prison gave him a solid post-graduate course. I think above it all he took real pleasure in knowing that his advice about writing actually helped people. He was proud of that.
