Myeloproliferative Neoplasms: Biology and Treatment

Philadelphia chromosome-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) - including polycythemia vera (PV), essential thrombocythemia (ET) and primary myelofibrosis (PM) - are clonal stem cell disorders characterized by acquired activating mutations which result in an excessive production of red blood cells, platelets, and neutrophils. Recent advances in the understanding of the molecular biology and genomics of MPNs have led to the development of novel targeted treatment approaches; however, the high rate of life-threatening vascular events and the high risk of disease progression with myelofibrotic and leukemic transformation continue to present challenges in the management of MPNs. Thereby, there remains a need for novel treatment strategies. Recently, research has revealed a role for clonal hematopoiesis, driver mutations and inflammation in thrombosis risk, which may provide a basis for novel thrombosis-prevention strategies.

Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation

Since the original publication of Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation: Clinical Research and Practice, Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSC) has undergone several fast-paced changes. In this second edition, the editors have focused on topics relevant to evolving knowledge in the field in order to better guide clinicians in decision-making and management of their patients, as well as help lead laboratory investigators in new directions emanating from clinical observations. Some of the most respected clinicians and scientists in this discipline have responded to the recent advances in the field by providing state-of-the-art discussions addressing these topics in the second edition. The text covers the scope of human genomic variation, the methods of HLA typing and interpretation of high-resolution HLA results. Comprehensive and up-to-date, Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation: Clinical Research and Practice, Second Edition offers concise advice on today's best clinical practice and will be of significant benefit to all clinicians and researchers in allogeneic HSC transplantation.

Blood and Marrow Transplantation Long Term Management

Blood and Marrow Transplantation Long Term Management Hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) provides curative therapy for a variety of diseases. Over the past several decades, significant advances have been made in the field of HCT, to the point where HCT has become an integral part of treatment modality for a variety of hematologic malignancies and some nonmalignant diseases. HCT remains an important treatment option for a wide variety of hematologic and nonhematologic disorders, despite recent advances in the field of immunologic therapies. Factors driving this growth include expanded disease indications, greater donor options (expanding unrelated donor registries and haploidentical HCT...

Ontogeny of Hematopoiesis, Aplastic Anemia

Many questions were raised during this multidisciplinary meeting during which geneticists, haematologists, embryologists, immunologists, transplant surgeons and physicians exchanged views on these questions. The second part of the meeting was devoted to an examination of the mechanisms of medullary deficiency. A more clinical approach was taken to the epidemiological, molecular and genetic aspects of medullary deficiency. There was also discussion of various therapeutic methods, including transplants, the use of haematopoietic growth factors, immunosuppressive treatments and gene therapy. In November 2011, an agreement brokered by the GCC brought an end to Yemen's tumultuous uprising. The National Dialogue Conference has opened a window of opportunity for change, bringing Yemen's main political forces together with groups that were politically marginalized. Yet, the risk of collapse is serious, and if Yemen is to remain a viable state, it must address numerous political, social and economic challenges. In this invaluable volume, experts with extensive Yemen experience provide innovative analysis of the country's major crises: centralized governance, the role of the military, ethnic conflict, separatism, Islamism, foreign intervention, water scarcity and economic development. ...
