Religion and Development in Southern and Central Africa: Vol 2
This book is a result of a joint conference, which was held from 18th-22nd July 2017 under the theme Religion, Citizenship and Development – Southern African Perspectives." The theme of the conference was adopted in order to underline the importance and significance of religion in the socio-economic development of people in the world generally and in Southern and Central Africa in particular. The papers in the book are divided into two volumes. Volume one consists of papers which directly discuss religion and development in one form or another. The second volume contains papers that discuss religion and other pertinent issues related to development. The papers are grouped into sub-themes for ease of reference. These include Citizenship and Development, Migration and Development, Disability and Development, Pentecostal Churches and Development and Religion and Society. All in all, despite a divergence of sub-themes in volume two, all point to issues to do with the role of religion in development in Southern and Central Africa today.
African Christianity in Botswana
A historical examination of African Christianity in Botswana, as now expressed in the African Independent Church. The study charts the development of this popular movement as a form of Christianity based on a mingling of African experiences of human existence, and teachings of the universal church. It describes how the African Independent Church developed alongside the Tswana Church and the Batswana people; as a rejection of the white missionaries' attack on Tswana culture and paternalism; and under the influence of the independent church movement in South Africa during apartheid. The author maintains, this resulted in a Church that is compatible with, acceptable and relevant to the indigenous culture; and which is simultaneously a genuinely African version of Christianity.

It was jointly organized by the Association of Theological Institutions in Southern and Central Africa (ATISCA), All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC), Bread for the World (BfdW), Circle of Concerned African Women Theologians (CIRCLE) and Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC). It was hosted by the Department of Religious Studies, Classics and Philosophy at the University of Zimbabwe, Harare.
African Traditional Religion in Malawi
The first full-length study of one of the territorial rain cults; and an endeavour to preserve knowledge about a rapidly changing complex system of traditional beliefs, rituals, and practices, under the influence of Christianity, Islam, and western education. Within this cult, a person who is possessed by the spirit of the ancestors is commonly known as Bimbi: the seer, a charismatic and moral leader, to whom the community ascribes a prophetic role. As a religious system, the Bimbi cult has an intricate system of agricultural rituals such as rainmaking ceremonies, a distinctive unwritten theology, elaborate liturgical observances and an organised, inherited priesthood. Studying the Bimbi cult from a multi-disciplinary perspective, the author illustrated how traditional beliefs and practices still have a grip on people in the countryside, who live in an agricultural subsistence economy, and at the mercy of ecological forces. He contends that these forces will continue to shape their understanding of God, themselves and the world around them for many years to come, unless these people change from an agricultural to an industrial society.

Gender and African Indigenous Religions
Focusing on the work of contemporary African women researchers, this volume explores feminist perspectives in relation to African Indigenous Religions (AIR). It evaluates what the Circle of Concerned African Women Theologians’ research has achieved and proposed since its launch in 1989, their contribution to the world of knowledge and liberation, and the potential application to nurturing a justice-oriented world. The book considers the methodologies used amongst the Circle to study African Indigenous Religions, the AIR sources of knowledge that are drawn on, and the way in which women are characterized. It reflects on how ideas drawn from African Indigenous Religions might address issues of patriarchy, colonialism, capitalism, racism, tribalism, and sexual and disability-based discrimination.
