The Citizen Handbook

A handbook on citizenship in America. Two questions the authors addressed in developing it were: how can we make the information useful for everyone regardless of where they live?; and how can we make students familiar with the information the book contains and answer the everyday questions they will confront as citizens? To answer these questions the authors made this volume interactive, a format in which students help write the book. Students can complete the volume by answering questions and filling in their responses. With sections on the duties and roles of the citizen, worker, consumer, and individual or family member, this volume contains the basic information necessary for day-to-day survival as a new citizen of the USA. The book is only available in packs of ten.

American Liturgy

How can celebrating the "holy days" of American culture help us to understand what it means to be both Christian and American? In timely essays on Super Bowl Sunday, Mother's Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, and other holidays of the secular calendar, James Calvin Davis explores the wisdom that Christian tradition brings to our sense of American identity, as well as the ways in which American culture might prompt us to discern the imperatives of faith in new ways. Rather than demonizing culture or naively baptizing it, Davis models a bidirectional mode of reflection, where faith convictions and cultural values converse with and critique one another. Focusing on topics like politics, race, parenting, music, and sports, these essays remind us that culture is as much human accomplishment and gift as it is a challenge to Christian values, and there is insight to be discovered in a theologically astute investment in America's "holy days."

In Hostile Skies

James "Jim" Davis piloted a B-24, as part of the 8th Air Force, on nearly thirty missions in the European Theatre during World War II. He flew support missions for Operations Cobra and Market Garden and numerous bombing missions over occupied Europe in the summer and fall of 1944, attacking enemy airfields, airplane factories, railroad marshalling yards, ship yards, oil refineries, and chemical plants. While he and his crew survived without serious injuries, they witnessed the destruction of many of their friends' planes and experienced serious damage to their own plane on several occasions.
