Mandates, Parties, and Voters

Most research on two-party elections has considered the outcome as a single, dichotomous event: either one or the other party wins. In this groundbreaking book, James Fowler and Oleg Smirnov investigate not just who wins, but by how much, and they marshal compelling evidence that mandates-in the form of margin of victory-matter. Using theoretical models, computer simulation, carefully designed experiments, and empirical data, the authors show that after an election the policy positions of both parties move in the direction preferred by the winning party-and they move even more if the victory is large. In addition, Fowler and Smirnov not only show that the divergence between the policy positions of the parties is greatest when the previous election was close, but also that policy positions are further influenced by electoral volatility and ideological polarization. This pioneering book will be of particular interest to political scientists, game theoreticians, and other scholars who study voting behavior and its short-term and long-range effects on public policy.

Summary of Nicholas A. Christakis & James H. Fowler's Connected

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The violence of these examples is perplexing. What does Anton’s brother and nephew and Kimmy’s friend have to do with anything. What explains their actions, taken one week or five years later. #2 The person-to-person spread of violence is not a novelty, but rather an ancient phenomenon. It is not just that the impetus to revenge is ancient, but that violence can spread through social ties and has done so since humans emerged from the African savanna. #3 The role that social connections can play in the spread of both good and bad deeds has prompted the creation of novel strategies to address social problems. For example, programs in several U. S. metropolitan areas involve teams of violence interrupters who attempt to stop the killing by breaking the cycle of transmission. #4 Our connections affect every aspect of our lives. They are always there, exerting both subtle and dramatic influence over our choices, actions, thoughts, feelings, and even our desires.

"A dazzlingly erudite synthesis of history, philosophy, anthropology, genetics, sociology, economics, epidemiology, statistics, and more" (Frank Bruni, The New York Times), Blueprint shows why evolution has placed us on a humane path -- and how we are united by our common humanity. For too long, scientists have focused on the dark side of our biological heritage: our capacity for aggression, cruelty, prejudice, and self-interest. But natural selection has given us a suite of beneficial social features, including our capacity for love, friendship, cooperation, and learning. Beneath all of our inventions -- our tools, farms, machines, cities, nations -- we carry with us innate proclivities to ...

Lamplight in the Shadows

"How had it happened? How had his entire world been turned upside down; his every sense of right and wrong, of morals and religious duty, been so deftly swept aside to leave his mind in a tumult of emotions?" Set in the early 1990s, Dr James Armstrong, a young, newly-qualified GP lives with his wife, Janice, in Barminster, where he is busy laying out plans for their future. However, his search for a medical partnership is complicated by a long-term and persistent sense of being called to ordination in the Church of England.
