Cuban-born, Mexico-based artist Jorge Pardo (born 1963) explores the intersection of contemporary painting, design, sculpture and architecture. Employing a broad palette of vibrant colors, eclectic patterns, and natural and industrial materials, Pardo's works range from murals to home furnishings to collages to larger-than-life fabrications. Here in conversation with art writer, teacher and curator Jan Tumlir (born 1962), he discusses contemporary art, design, publishing and music. The conversations also connect to the varied contexts of Los Angeles and Merida, Mexico, where they took place. The result is a story of a unique intellectual friendship that has helped define both of their thinking and practice.
Classical Liberalism and International Economic Order
This book makes an innovative link between classical liberalism and questions of international economic order. The author begins with an outline of classical liberalism as applied to domestic economic order. He then surveys the classical liberal tradition from the Scottish Enlightenment to modern thinkers like Knight, Hayekn and Viner. Finally, he brings together the insights of thinkers in this tradition to provide a synthetic overview of classical liberalism and international economic order. The author's deployment of classical liberalism strikes a different note to other 'liberal' interpretations in economics and political science. In particular, classical liberalism points to the domestic preconditions of international order, and advocates unilateral liberalisation in the context of an institutional competition between states.

A collaboration between Jan Tumlir and Brian Kennon and a "prelude catalogue" to Tumlir's exhibition of the same name, Desertshore begins with the image from the cover of the Nico album (also a film still from La Circatrice Interieure by Philippe Garrel) to then find a path on/through works from the late 60's - 70's that commonly trip out from the city center and travel to the pasts and futures of desert and space. Moving through Robert Smithson, Ed Ruscha, Bas Jan Ader, Stanley Kubrick's 2001, Alejandro Jodorowsky's El Topo,and Pink Floyd, the book ends with a re-telling of the final sequence of Michelangelo Antonioni's Zabriskie Point.
Bones and Bloodline to Space
A New Treatment of the Object Trouvé. The artistic vocabulary of Tatiana Echeverri Fernandez (born 1974 in San Jose, Costa Rica, lives and works in Berlin) is defined by a complex collection of sculptural objects that she couples with photograms in the exhibition space. She finds her materials on scrapyards and exhibits discarded car parts. The sculptural installations by the student of Rosemarie Trockel are sensual and subtle; Tatiana Echeverri Fernandez rigorously rejects locomotion in her works. Correlating photograms show abstract particles, and their color brings to mind bodily fluids--the artist creates a scenery with loose narrative strands. The publication Bones and Bloodline to Space documents her solo exhibition at MARS in Los Angeles. The text was written by Jan Tumlir. An interview with the artist was conducted by Jan Verwoert.
