Forças poderosas, porém, têm outros planos, baseados em profecias diferentes e ainda mais ancestrais; assim, sacerdotes e fiéis de Set operam nas sombras, usando todos os meios necessários — incluindo magia e criaturas ofídias — para frustrar os planos dos oponentes. Depois de explorar diversas localidades ao longo do período da Era Hiboriana em que Conan explorou os mares com Bêlit, o autor enfim faz o célebre bárbaro percorrer o venenoso rio Zarjiba, onde a história chega ao fim. A canção de Bêlit, história dividida em dois volumes, começa logo depois do início de "A rainha da Costa Negra" ― conto escrito por Robert E.
