Ecology of Mediterranean Evergreen Oak Forests

Ecology of Mediterranean Evergreen Oak Forests

Used by humans since ancient times, evergreen oak forests still cover extensive mountain areas of the Mediterranean Basin. These broadleaved evergreen forests occupy a transitional zone between the cool-temperate deciduous forest biome and the drier Mediterranean pine forests and shrublands. Slow growing and casting a deep shade, the sclerophyllous holm oak (Quercus ilex) absolutely dominates the closed canopy of many Mediterranean evergreen oak forests. This is a synthesis of 20 years of research on the structure, function, and dynamics of holm oak forests in two intensively studied experimental areas in Spain. By combining observational measurements at the leaf, tree, plot, and catchment scales with field experiments and modelling, the authors explore how these forests cope with strong water limitation and repeated disturbances.

In social animals, perturbations may trigger specific behavioural responses with consequences for dispersal and complex population dynamics. Perturbations raise the need for information gathering in order to reduce uncertainty and increase resilience. Updated information is then shared within the group and social behaviours emerge as a self-organized process. This social information factoralizes with the size of the group, and it is finally used for making crucial decisions about, for instance, when to leave the patch and where to go. Indeed, evolution has favoured philopatry over dispersal, and this trade-off is challenged by perturbations. When perturbations accumulate over time, they may ...

Au verso de la couverture : "The international Hinode mission was launched from Japan on 23 September 2006. The spacecraft carries a suite of instruments that permit observations of the Sun and its atmosphere with unprecedented resolution and precision. During its first two years of operation, Hinode has enabled numerous breakthroughs in our understanding of magnetic fields within the solar atmosphere and their relationship to the energetic solar phenomena that affect the Earth's space environment. Some of those breakthroughs were presented at the First Hinode Science Meeting held in Dublin, Ireland, in August 2007 (ASPCS Volume 397). By the time the Second Hinode Science Meeting was held in Boulder, Colorado, 29 September-3 October 2008, researchers had been able to subject Hinode data to in-depth, quantitative analyses and to make comparisons with detailed numerical and analytic models of solar phenomena. This volume presents brief summaries of work presented at the Second Hinode Science Meeting"

The Barcelona School of Ecological Economics and Political Ecology

In this open access book, ecological economics and political ecology traditions converge into a single academic school. The book constitutes a common ground where multiple and critical voices are expressed, covering a broad scope of urgent matters at the crossroad between society, economy and the natural environment. The manuscripts composing this compendium offer appealing material for both experienced and younger researchers interested in interdisciplinary exchanges in the field of the social environmental sciences. It combines historical accounts with recent theoretical and empirical developments revolving around the interaction between three foundational notions of the Barcelona School: social metabolism, environmental justice and self-reflective science.
