Nazi Germany and the Holocaust in Historical Crime Fiction
This is the first book- length academic study of the portrayal in contemporary historical crime fiction of Nazi Germany and the Holocaust and their legacies. It discusses novels written by five authors: David Downing, Philip Kerr, Luke McCallin, Joseph Kanon and David Thomas. Their work belongs to a subgenre of the historical crime novel that has emerged since the late 1980s to become a significant body of writing located at the intersection of crime fiction and Holocaust literature. The readings of these novels explore questions of form and genre to ask how popular fiction might approach the Holocaust. Themes of resistance and complicity and the relationship between them, and problems of guilt and responsibility are also discussed. This book also explores questions of justice to show how these novels explore social and moral justice, and vengeance and revenge, as alternatives to ordinary legal justice after the Holocaust.
Contemporary Approaches to Legal Linguistics
In this volume, scholars explore and discuss current issues in Theoretical Legal Linguistics (TLL) and Applied Legal Linguistics (ALL), contributing to the growing body of international research in the field. Focus is placed on the interconnected skills, tasks and approaches to the study of legal language in its plethora of facets as presented at the first international conference and the second International Legal Linguistics Workshop (ILLWS19) of the Austrian Association for Legal Linguistics. The articles present research in the areas of contract interpretation, bijuralism, the European Reference Language System, clear language and communication in legal settings, issues in legal semantics, plain legal language in multilingual legislative drafting, legal language teaching, light verb constructions in legal German, forensic linguistic expert testimony, deontic modality in legislative drafting, migration and legal language, appeals in Russian and their qualification as language crimes, and graduation in the use of force statutes. The concepts, methods, and findings offer valuable insights into current research in legal linguistics.
Buried in Denmark
During World War II about 300 allied aircrafts crashed over Denmark. A little less than 100 crewmembers survived and were rescued to safety i Sweden. Approximately 300 crewmembers survived but were subsequently captured by the Germans and taken to a POW camp. It is assumed that approximately 500 airmen died in the ocean around Denmark and were never found. 1160 dead allied airmen were buried in Denmark. 108 allied airmen were buried at Svino Cemetery during the war. This little book tells the story of Svinø Memorial Grove and some of the destinies attached to this place.
