For every parent who’s worried about their child’s weight or size, this insightful book offers an approach to health that focuses on the whole child—not just the growth chart. All children deserve a future free of health concerns and one full of self-esteem and wellbeing, no matter their size. Yet, given the rise in childhood obesity, there’s enormous pressure on parents to raise fit, thin kids - even if their kids aren’t designed to be that way. So, what does a healthy, fit child look like, and how can parents actually raise one, especially in a world of abundant food, busy lives, toxic diet culture, and societal pressures? Pediatric nutritionist Jill Castle offers parents a roadm...

Food Movements Unite!

Food Movements Unite! Strategies to transform our food systems The present corporate food regime dominating the planet’s food systems is environmentally destructive, financially volatile and socially unjust. Though the regime’s contributions to the planet’s four-fold food-fuel-finance and climate crises are well documented, the “solutions” advanced by our national and global institutions reinforce the same destructive technological path, the same global market fundamentalism, and the same unregulated consolidation of corporate power in the food system that brought us the crisis in the first place. A dynamic global food movement has risen up in the face of this sustained corporate a...

Designed to synthesize what we know about the nature of environmental influences (nurture) upon development, Wachs artfully explores whether development depends upon a sole factor - the rearing environment, genetics, nutrition, or individual characteristics - or, whether the degree of directional consistency combined with the extent of covariance among these factors may have the most developmental impact. Issues such as how individuals respond differently to stress, medical treatment, parenting styles, teaching approaches and daycare centers are all discussed through careful analysis of research and theories from a variety of fields.

Health Promoting Settings in the 21st Century: New Approaches and Competencies to Address Complexity and Inequity in an Increasingly Globalized World

The Ottawa Charter specifies that health promotion “has to be facilitated in schools, homes, workplaces and community settings” because “health is created and lived by people within the settings of their everyday life; where they learn, work, play and love”. COVID-19 had a profound impact on people’s lives and settings-based approaches have been developed in different shapes and formats. COVID-19 has also highlighted social vulnerabilities and laid bare how structural drivers of health inequity interact with class, race, ethnicity, gender, and education. Evidence is needed to document how these determinants can be addressed using settings-based approaches, and how new settings such as digital media, theories and frameworks can be used to tailor context appropriate strategies. Evidence is also needed to address challenges related to sustainability, resilience, and adaptation of complex systems in view of global health issues such as geopolitical instability, climate change and migration, as well as competencies needed to address them.

Measuring Environment Across the Life Span

"Psychologists have long understood that laboratory settings only approximate genuine human environments. Yet, how can the influence of the real world, with all its complexity and variability, be measured? This edited volume deals with this question by providing theoretical models and testing methods for quantifying physical and social environments that serve as contexts of human development." "This volume represents the state of the art in environmental assessment procedures and will be a welcome resource for psychologists specializing in assessment, methodology, and development."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
