The Covenant and the Sword

In January 1949 the first Arab-Israeli war ended. In October 1956 the second began with Israel’s invasion of Egypt. What happened in those intervening seven years to persuade the Israelis to attack is the subject of this book, first published in 1965. Israel’s relations with the Arab countries formed only a sub-plot in a complex, many-layered drama. The main characters were the Arabs and the Great Powers. The story moved in three main themes: the argument amongst the Great Powers over who would have what in the Middle East; the Arabs’ struggle against the West for independence and self-respect; and the dispute amongst the Arabs themselves over who should lead that struggle. These themes were well developed long before the Balfour Declaration was put in the mail and the Palestine Question became an important world issue.

Oriental Neighbors

Focusing on Oriental Jews and their relations with their Arab neighbors in Mandatory Palestine, this book analyzes the meaning of the hybrid Arab-Jewish identity that existed among Oriental Jews, and discusses their unique role as political, social, and cultural mediators between Jews and Arabs. Integrating Mandatory Palestine and its inhabitants into the contemporary Semitic-Levantine surroundings, Oriental Neighbors illuminates broad areas of cooperation and coexistence, which coincided with conflict and friction, between Oriental and Sephardi Jews and their Arab neighbors. The book brings the Oriental Jewish community to the fore, examines its role in the Zionist nation-building process, and studies its diverse and complex links with the Arab community in Palestine.

Jews Among Arabs

During two days in May 1986 some fifty scholars, graduate students, and other interested individuals gathered at Princeton University for a colloquium entitled 'Jews Among Arabs: Contacts and Boundaries'. The conference was organised in awareness of the controversial tone in which the subject of 'Jews and Arabs' has been discussed in recent years. Against the backdrop of the Arab-Israeli conflict, the Jewish-Arab relationship of the past has come under new and intense scrutiny, with historical questions often masking political predilections. The six papers of this book comprise the fruits of the colloquium and, it is hoped, make a qualitative though small contribution to a different kind of study of Jewish-Arab relations in the modern world, one that might be relevant for other minorities as well.
