Women in Early Imperial China

After a long spell of chaos, the Qin and Han dynasties (221 BCE–220 CE) saw the unification of the Chinese Empire under a single ruler, government, and code of law. During this era, changing social and political institutions affected the ways people conceived of womanhood. New ideals were promulgated, and women's lives gradually altered to conform to them. And under the new political system, the rulers' consorts and their families obtained powerful roles that allowed women unprecedented influence in the highest level of government. Recognized as the leading work in the field, this introductory survey offers the first sustained history of women in the early imperial era. Now in a revised ed...

A Companion to Yi jing Numerology and Cosmology

Translations of the Yi jing into western languages have been biased towards the yili ('meaning and pattern') tradition, whereas studies of the xiangshu ('image and number') tradition - which takes as its point of departure the imagery and numerology associated with divination and its hexagrams, trigrams, lines, and related charts and diagrams - has remained relatively unexplored. This major new reference work is organised as a Chinese-English encyclopedia, arranged alphabetically according to the pinyin romanisation, with Chinese characters appended. A character index as well as an English index is included. The entries are of two kinds: technical terms and various other concepts related to the 'image and number' tradition, and bio-bibliographical information on Chinese Yi jing scholars. Each entry in the former category has a brief explanation that includes references to the origins of the term, cross-references, and a reference to an entry giving a more comprehensive treatment of the subject.

Molecular and Cellular Mechanisms of Synaptopathies: Emerging Synaptic aging-related molecular pathways in Neurological Disorders

Synapses are complex, highly specialized biological structures. Therefore, even slight functional disturbance can lead to disruptive brain disorders. Dysfunction of these structures is associated with a variety of aging-related neurodegenerative conditions, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Most synaptopathies compromise complex signaling pathways by progressively affecting the synaptic protein repertoire. Currently, the treatment of most of these pathologies focuses on the mitigation of symptoms; in consequence, further efforts need to be made to elucidate the common molecular culprit and cellular mechanisms underlying the cause of these severe pathologies to serve as therapeutic...
