Marine Slides and Other Mass Movements

Svend Saxov* and J.K. Nieuwenhuis** *Laboratory of Geophysics, Aarhus University Finlandsgade 6, DK-8200 Aarhus N, Denmark **Ministry of Transport and Public Works Rijkswaterstaat, Deltadienst Van Alkemadelaan 400, 2597 AT the Hague The Netherlands The NATO Science Committee Special Programme Panel on Marine Sciences decided in September 1979 that a work ing group should prepare a document dealing with the prob lems of marine slides. The working group submitted to the Panel a proposal for the arrangement of an interdisciplinary workshop on Marine Slides and other Mass Movements, and the Panel decided to fund such a workshop. Mass movement of soils and rocks on subaerial slopes is a subject which has been intensely studied over the past fifty years, and its literature is becoming extens ive. The submarine phenomenon, although similar in its pbysical basis, is much less studied, but has become an important subject (particularly during the past decade) because of the increase of man's use of the coastal en vironment and the intensified exploration for oil and minerals on the continental margins and ocean basins.

Mechanisms of Migration in Fishes

The last major synthesis of our knowledge of fish migration and the underlying transport and guidance phenomena, both physical and biological, was "Fish Migration" published 16 years ago by F.R. Harden Jones (1968). That synthesis was based largely upon what could be gleaned by classical fishery-biology techni.ques, such as tagging and recapture studies, commercial fishing statistics, and netting and trapping studies. Despite the fact that Harden Jones also provided, with a good deal of thought and speculation, a theoretical basis for studying the various aspects of fish migration and migratory orientation, progress in this field has been, with a few excepti.ons, piecemeal and more disjointe...

Clay Microstructure

Plan of Review This review of clay microstructure is aimed at the diverse group of professionals who share an interest in the properties of fine-grained minerals in sediments. During the last several decades, members of this group have included geologists, soil scientists, soil engineers, engineering geologists, and ceramics scientists. More recently, it has included significant numbers of marine geologists and other engineers. Each of the disciplines has developed special techniques for investigating properties of clay sediments that have proven to be fruitful in answering questions of central interest. Knowledge of clay microstructure-the fabric of a sediment and the physico chemical inter...

This report is the result of an examination of the feasibility of isolating contaminated dredged material on the abyssal seafloor. The focus is on the technical and environmental factors that constrain the considerations of feasibility. The sources of the materials are assumed to be in U.S. coastal waters. A thorough conceptual design of a dredging to abyssal deposition system is analyzed with regard to each subsystem and to the entire operational concept. These subsystems include: (1) a low leakage dredge, (2) equipment for material handling and loading into geosynthetic fabric containers (GFCs), (3) the barge for transport and navigation, and (4) the subsystem for releasing the GFCs to sin...

The Nordic Seas

" ... as soon as one has traversed the greater part of the wild sea, one comes upon such a huge quantity of ice that nowhere in the whole world has the like been known." "This ice is of a wonderful nature. It lies at times quite still, as one would expect, with openings or large fjords in it; but sometimes its movement is so strong and rapid as to equal that of a ship running before the wind, and it drifts against the wind as often as with it." Kongespeilet - 1250 A.D. ("The Mirror of Kings") Modern societies require increasing amounts influence on the water mass and on the resulting of scientific information about the environment total environment of the region; therefore, cer tain of its characteristics will necessarily be in whieh they live and work. For the seas this information must describe the air above the sea, included.
