The World's Fair

The World's Fair is Biography/Fiction. 1937-39 is the time frame. The place is Ottawa ON and Gatineau Que. It is the story of Michael Maguire in search of his legitimate father. His story is peopled with colorful characters of Irish, French and Algonquin lineage. The plot emerges effortlessly through the characters, finally leading us to the shocking truth of Michael's paternity. In the face of emotional disaster, the book ends on an optimistic note. Picaresque comes from Picaresca then shortened to Picaro meaning rascal or rogue. This style of novel originated in 16th century Spain and flourished throughout Europe in the 17th and 18th century. It continues to influence modern literature today. It adopts a style of realism with shades of comedy and satire. The plot emerges as a result of the thoughts and actions of the characters. The Adventures of Augie March by Saul Bellow is a prime modern day example of Picaresque writing. "If I understand it," Bellow said, "you can understand it too."

The fame of Joan of Arc began in her lifetime and, though it has dipped a little now and then, she has never vanished from view. Her image acts as a seismograph for the shifts and settlings of personal and political ideals: Joan of Arc is the heroine every movement has wanted as their figurehead. In France, anti-semitic, xenophobic, extreme right parties have claimed her since the Action Francaise in the 19th century. By contrast, Socialists, feminists, and liberal Catholics rallied to her as the champion of the dispossessed and the wrongly accused. Joan of Arc has also played a crucial role in changing visions of female heroism. She has proved an inexhaustible source of inspiration for writ...

"During the last twenty years, seven books of mine have been published as historical novels which to me are biographies of previous lives I have known. Far Memory is the autobiography of my ¬rst thirty years in the twentieth century. From early childhood, often to my extreme discomfort, I was sometimes aware beyond the usual range of the ¬ve senses. I tried to ignore the implications of this awareness, but it was too insistent; so in an attempt to understand what was happening I laboriously trained the faculty of far memory. This book describes, among other things, how I did so and what happened to me as the result. "Far Memory, Joan Grant's autobiography, tells how Winged Pharaoh came to be written. It is a most touching, most amusing, most astonishing real life story." London Daily Express "So fluent, dramatic and now and then humorous is she that her story may captivate even non-believers in extra sensory powers." Publisher's Weekly

Joan of Arc (Classic Reprint)

Excerpt from Joan of Arc The authors whose works I have chiefly used in writing this Life of Joan of Arc, are-first, Quicherat, who was the first to publish at length the Minutes of the two trials concerning the Maid - that of her trial at Rouen in 1430, and of her rehabilitation in 1456, and who unearthed so many chronicles relating to her times; secondly, Wallon, whose Life of Joan of Arc is of all the fullest and most reliable; thirdly, Fabre, who has within the last few years published several most important books respecting the life and death of Joan. Fabre was the first to make a translation in full of the two trials which Quicherat had first pub lished in the original Latin text. Abo...

This book rescues and brings together two important essays by two renowned historians. Jeanne d'Arc's Victory at Orleans by Edward S. Creasy. And Trial and Execution of Jeanne d'Arc by Jules Michelet. The edition is completed by twelve images about different scenes in the life of Joan of Arc, as it has been idealized by several painters over time.
