Cultural Mega-Events and Heritage

This book analyses case studies of heritage-rich cities that hosted mega-events to discuss emerging challenges, controversies, and accomplishments. The future of mega-events has never been more uncertain. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has introduced an unparalleled level of doubt regarding the kind of mega-events that will take place in the coming years. This book arrives at a quite unique moment of reflection. Prior to 2020, cities were already questioning the traditional format of mega-events (e.g. Olympics and Expo) while other cultural mega-events have been spreading and gaining popularity, thanks in part to typically lower costs of infrastructures and venues, far more adaptable arrangem...

Religious Life in Poland

This book provides a concise historical outline of religion in Poland up until its entry into the European Union in 2004, together with a longer presentation of contemporary religious issues. Albeit largely mono-ethnic and overwhelmingly Catholic after the loss of its large Jewish population to the Holocaust, and subsequent post-World War II border shifts, traces of an historic diversity remain in Poland to date, playing a greater role than mere numbers would suggest. Poland's fairly robust religious life is affected by the country's continuing modernization and its various institutions, and this is discussed within a broad context. One of the unfortunate legacies of decades of communism is a stunted civil society; while at different levels there are conflicts involving religion, at the grassroots it is one of the few forces building much needed trust in present-day Polish society.

Urban Change in Central Europe

The changes that Central European cities have undergone since 1989 deserve a complex, interdisciplinary analysis that offers deep insight into the specific nature of the transformation taking place in the region. This book presents a multidimensional and cross-disciplinary case study of Kraków, focusing on the changes taking place in Central Europe over the last three decades. This book answers the question of how the once neglected city of Kraków has transformed into a thriving global tourist destination, an attractive investment market, and a European leader of shared services. It examines political, socio-economic, cultural, and architectural development of the city against the ongoing ...

Visions and Revisions of Europe

Visions and Revisions of Europe offers a multidisciplinary debate on the various political, social, and cultural issues that are at the heart of contemporary European discourse, with a focus on the relations between the so-called “New” and “Old” Europe. A range of possible scenarios for the future of the EU, as well as a discussion of the factors affecting current crises are at the forefront of the debate, which lead the reader to reflect upon often overlooked aspects of European integration, such as Germany’s hegemonic role in the Union, or historical narratives and myths that need to be deconstructed and critically analysed. Contemporary populist movements also play a key role, as do the often difficult processes of migration and EU mobility, which reveal the tensions, fears, and lines of exclusion in contemporary European societies. Finally, the role of values – namely an adherence to human rights and responsibility over the global social order – which in the 1970s was a cornerstone of EU discursive action and identity building, serves as a lasting point of reflection on the uncertain future of the EU’s axio-normative direction(s).

The idea of heritage as a “capital of irreplaceable cultural, social and economic value” was already present in the European Charter of the Architectural Heritage, adopted by the Council of Europe in 1975 (par.3). Today, this discourse is getting increasing attention on the research agenda. Some argue that, although heritage is always valued highly, the current interest in the impact of heritage is caused by the democratisation of heritage and the increased importance of heritage in today’s society. Others argue that a universal scarcity of funds for heritage management and conservation is the reason to give it its proper attention. Therefore, the Raymond Lemaire International Centre f...

Borderland

Borderland: On Reviving Culture is a most timely book that tells the story of a project for our times. It is the story of the Borderland organization, which consists of two dovetailing initiatives, an international NGO, the Borderland Foundation, and the more locally and nationally focused Borderland Centre of Arts, Culture and Nations. Borderland is based in the far northeastern corner of Poland close to the borders of Russia, Lithuania and Belarus, where it has devised an array of programs and initiatives designed to promote harmonious cultural plurality in a region of inter-ethnic and religious tensions that date back centuries. Ian Watson, Director of the Theatre Program, Director of the Urban Civic Initiative, Department of Arts, Culture and Media, Rutgers University-Newark

Kulturotropia

Z recenzji prof. dr hab. Grażyny Prawelskiej-Skrzypek, Instytut Spraw Publicznych Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego Może imponować swoboda i wnikliwość, z jaką Autorka porusza się w omawianej problematyce. Czytelnik znajdzie tu nie tylko omówienia różnych poglądów i ujęć, lecz także przekonujące przedstawienie ewolucji podejścia do rozwoju miast i syntetyczny opis konsekwencji wdrażania różnych konceptów. (…) W rezultacie powstało oryginalne i unikalne w polskiej literaturze kompendium wiedzy o roli kultury w rozwoju współczesnych miast. Jest to praca dobrze przemyślana i ułożona, starannie zredagowana i napisana ładnym językiem. Z recenzji prof. dr hab. Jerzego Hausnera, Uniwersytet Ekonomiczny w Krakowie
