COVID-19 disrupted the premier road races known as the World Marathon Majors (WMM) that take place annually in Berlin, London, Chicago, Boston, Tokyo, and New York City. Normally spanning the calendar from March to November, the pandemic forced a rescheduling of the 2021 WMM such that all the races would take place during a six week stretch in the fall. At age 60, with only a single previous marathon under his belt and recently diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, Joe Drake decided to run all six of these races on the compressed schedule. In Run With It, writing in a style that is charmingly humorous and informative, Joe marks his debut as an author. He tells of his transformation into a marathoner, the physical and logistical challenges of running these races amid a world eager to emerge from a global catastrophe, and how this quest with the help of friends, family, and the running community allowed him to devise a strategy for coping with Parkinson's.

"I'm flat on my back on a couch that's too short in a windowless room in the bureau. I can't even sit at a computer, much less make a keyboard work. My arms and legs are shaking uncontrollably. Although I am only 53 years old, I have already been struggling with Parkinson's disease for seven years. And right now the disease is winning." So begins Joel Havemann's account of the insidious disease that is Parkinson's. Into his own story, Havemann weaves accessible explanations of how Parkinson's disrupts the brain's circuitry, how symptoms are managed through drugs and surgery, and how people cope with the disease's psychological challenges. The updated paperback edition brings the discussion of treatment options and research thoroughly up to date.

One of the things that has come out of writing this book is that I feel we should not surrender to Parkinson and it should not control our everyday activities. We should be more pro-active in fighting Parkinson in any way we can. The book will help you prepare or anticipate the symptoms of Parkinson. Educate yourself on all the subjects on PD to overcome and understand the bumps on the road we face on our journey. Shine the light on Parkinson is a book that will hopefully motivate not only the ones affected with PD but the general public to educate themselves on the disease of Parkinson.

Rexburg

The mountainous terrain and abundance of rivers near what would later become the city of Rexburg were a magnet for the Missouri Fur Company; in 1810, Maj. Andrew Henry, a representative for the company, built a trading post seven miles north of Rexburg. On March 10, 1883, Thomas E. Ricks, who was accompanied by 10 men, settled an area located east of the three buttes across the Snake River. Rexburg's early days reflected the typical lifestyle of many northwestern towns in the late 19th century: saloons dotted Main Street, cowboys got into shooting matches in town, and farmers struggled to conquer mother earth while pioneer families endured the cold harsh winters. The combination of tall sagebrush and volcanic ash proved to be an ideal agricultural combination for producing wheat, barley, and potatoes. Education was important, and a college was established in the early years, starting in 1888.
