Incorporating more than one linguistic code or mode of expression in literary and artistic productions has quickly grown over the last two decades. This volume pays special attention to the dynamic rise of code-switching especially in literature and performative arts, and explores strategies used by contemporary artists to compose their multilingual narratives as well as moves beyond the linguistic level in the direction of multimodality. The innovative frameworks and descriptions intend to highlight the different ways in which art, unlike ordinary language use, manifests language mixing and switching. Besides the papers by both young and established scholars, the volume includes a section of valuable contributions from multilingual authors and artists to bridge the gap between academic approaches and creative professional practices.

This book addresses the conceptualization and practice of Indigenous research methodologies especially in Sámi and North European academic contexts. It examines the meaning of Sámi research and research methodologies, practical levels of doing Indigenous research today in different contexts, as well as global debates in Indigenous research. The disparagement of multilingualism is a European development of the 18th and 19th centuries in which one national language and national literature were advocated, established and institutionalised. Multilingual writers made use of the creative potential of several languages even then. However, they often adapted to an increasingly monolingual book market, which made their individual multilingualism invisible. Why Sámi Sing is an anthropological inquiry into a singing practice found among the Indigenous Sámi people, living in the northernmost part of Europe. It inquires how the performance of melodies, with or without lyrics, may be a way of altering perception, relating to human and non-human presences, or engaging with the past. According to its practitioners, the Sámi "yoik" is more than a musical repertoire made up by humans: it is a vocal power received from the environment, one that reveals its possibilities with parsimony through practice and experience. Following the propensity of Sámi singers to take melodies seriously and experiment with them, this book establishes a conversation between Indigenous and Western epistemologies and introduces the "yoik" as a way of knowing in its own right, with both convergences and divergences vis-à-vis academic ways of knowing. It will be of particular interest to scholars of anthropology, ethnomusicology, and Indigenous studies.
