The intersection of business, peace and sustainable development is becoming an increasingly powerful space, and is already beginning to show the capability to drive major global change. This book deciphers how different forms of corporate engagement in the pursuit of peace and development have different impacts and outcomes. It looks specifically at how the private sector can better deliver peace contributions in fragile, violent and conflict settings and then at the deeper consequences of this agenda upon businesses, governments, international institutions and not least the local communities that are presumed to be the beneficiaries of such actions. It is the first book to compile the state...

The Building and Breaking of Peace

Private corporations are rarely discussed as playing a role in efforts to curb civil violence, even though they often have strong interests in maintaining stability. Violence often damages the infrastructure necessary to deliver goods to market or may directly target companies. Corporations also have a normative obligation to conduct business in ways that promote peace. While there are historical examples of firm-instigated violence and firms reaping benefits from instability and conflict, there is also evidence that corporations proactively engage in peacebuilding. For example, firms devise programs to promote economic development, offer access to education, and employ former combatants. In...

International Conflict and Conflict Management

This book asks scholars to reexamine international conflict and its management—in order to move the field toward directly theorizing about and examining the interdependence between conflict events and conflict management attempts. Despite decades of work, research on international conflict and its management remains siloed in three fundamental ways. First, scholars do not thoroughly address international conflict dynamics within studies of conflict management, even though the former give rise to the latter. Second, existing work generally investigates one conflict management strategy (e.g., mediation) at the expense of others (e.g., adjudication). These strategies, however, are not indepen...

Papou had stories to tell that went unheard until his granddaughter decided to write this book. He was not a hero, he said. He was a boy. He didnt choose to fight this war. He was drafted. He was only 18, a recent high school graduate, a child, and somebodys son. This boy survived landing on Omaha Beach with his friends falling all around him. But on the morning of October 7, 1944, he was almost fatally injured by a bomb that landed on his tent. He learned how to walk again, and chose to go straight back to the front lines - because he felt that was where he should be, with his buddies. He came back only to find that he was one of the few in his unit who remained. This is a story of WWII. Its also a story of love, faith, courage and hope. This book is appropriate for elementary through high school and addresses the US History and Social Studies standard of The World and the US' Place in it; Conflicts between and among countries and people, US World History Sequence.

Greeks in Queens

Greeks in Queens is an interesting history of this often unwritten about New York community. By the early 1900s, New York was becoming a melting pot for immigrants hailing from different nations. Though many settlers chose Manhattan as their home, others ventured forward into the borough of Queens. America itself was named the land of opportunity, and Greeks seeking those opportunities developed the largest Greek community outside of Athens in Astoria. Through the growth of the Greek community came Greek Orthodox schools and churches, the earliest in Queens being St. Demetrios, built in 1927, and Greek-owned businesses, especially catering halls like Crystal Palace, coffee shops (that now line busy Astoria streets), and diners. These establishments gave this special community a place to gather together and secure its standing and future in New York. Greeks in Queens traces the immigrant journey from Greece to America and shows how the Greeks--through wars, hard work, education, and dedication--developed a thriving and much larger community than their predecessors thought possible.
