Rival States, Rival Firms

In this theoretically original work, two distinguished authors explore the mutual interdependence of states and firms throughout the world. They show how global structural changes - in finance, technology, knowledge and politics - often impel governments to seek the help and cooperation of managers of multinational enterprises. Yet, as Professors Stopford and Strange demonstrate, this is constrained by each country's economic resources, its social structures and its political history. Based on grass-roots research into the experience of over 50 multinationals and more than 100 investment projects in three developing countries- Brazil, Malaysia and Kenya - the authors develop a matrix of agendas. They present the impact on projects of the multiple factors affecting the bargaining relationships between the government and the foreign firm at different times and in a variety of economic sectors. In conclusion they offer some guidelines for actions to both governments and firms and some points to future interdisciplinary research.

Rejuvenating the Mature Business

Baden-Fuller and Stopford challenge managers to jettison the traditional thinking that pervades their industry, and to replace it with new, entrepreneurial ideas ranging from distributor relationships to new product design to market scope. They profile such companies as Hotpoint, which broke traditional rules by focusing on a national market when its rivals were international; Benetton, whose innovative strategic supplier alliances have made it a low-capital, high-profit operation; Banc One, whose service innovations revolutionized U.S. consumer banking; and knife manufacturer Richardson Sheffield, whose pioneering quality control, "lean" production strategies, and new product innovations led it from near bankruptcy to world leadership. The stories of these companies and many others, from Toyota to British Airways, dramatize each phase of rejuvenation.

Information, Strategy, and Public Policy

In this volume, some of the world′s finest economists address a theme which is once again at the economic policy, namely the appropriate role for policy in a market economy. Can Adam Smith′s ′invisible hand′ mechanism be expected to allocate resources efficiently to meet the needs of society and is the role of government therefore limited at best? The authors draw on recent theoretical advances in the study of imperfect information and stratgic behavior to argue that the models of classical welfare economics are insufficient as a framework for understaning modern market economies The first two chapters by joseph Stiglitz and Frank Hahn represent assaults on the fundamental theorems o...
