Vaso-occlusive disorders including unstable angina, myocardial infarction, transient ischemic attacks, stroke and peripheral artery disease remain the major sources of morbidity and mortality in western civilization. Platelet activation and resulting platelet aggregation play a major role in the pathogenesis of these thromboembolic diseases. Recognition of the contribution of platelets to the pathophysiology of cardiovascular disease has provided impetus for the continued search for new antiplatelet agents. Hence, over the past two decades many strategies have been evaluated in the search for efficacious mechanisms to reduce platelet function. The medical need for more efficacious antithrombotic drugs and the growing understanding of the role of platelets in vascular injury have catalyzed the extensive evaluation of novel approaches to control platelet function. Along these lines, the volume therefore provides an in-depth assessment of ongoing clinical trials, new and clinically established agents, and other developments in this rapidly developing field.

HIV: Molecular Biology and Pathogenesis: Viral Mechanisms

The cumulative death toll from AIDS has reached 16.3 million individuals, and more than 33 million persons are currently living with HIV-1. Although it is one of the most-widely studied viruses, many mysteries remain about this pathogen. In this comprehensive two-volume set, HIV-1: Molecular Biology and Pathogenesis, leading investigators in HIV research present a timely picture of the molecular mechanisms which guide HIV-1 expression and replication and provide the most current clinical strategies for combating this virus. Twenty-six teams of experts unravel structure-function interactions of HIV-1 with host cells and the resulting pathological consequences, review strategies fo treatment, ...

Of related interest . . . Neuronal Nicotinic Receptors Pharmacology and Therapeutic Opportunities Edited by Stephen P. Arneric and Jorge D. Brioni Providing a comprehensive review of nicotinic receptors, this reference examines all aspects-from the molecular level to clinical applications. The editors cover the emerging molecular biological advances in the cloning of nAChRs, as well as the localization and regulation of these receptors, and the role these receptors have in central nervous system (CNS) disorder functions. Additionally, examined areas include in vivo pharmacology, and the therapeutic opportunities existing for agents that selectively interact with these receptors to treat CNS ...
