Lived Religion and Everyday Life in Early Modern Hagiographic Material
This book discusses the ways in which early modern hagiographic sources can be used to study lived religion and everyday life from the fifteenth to the seventeenth century. For several decades, saints’ lives, other spiritual biographies, miracle narratives, canonisation processes, iconography, and dramas, have been widely utilised in studies on medieval religious practices and social history. This fruitful material has however been overlooked in studies of the early modern period, despite the fact that it witnessed an unprecedented growth in the volume of hagiographic material. The contributors to this volume address this, and illuminate how early modern hagiographic material can be used for the study of topics such as religious life, the social history of medicine, survival strategies, domestic violence, and the religious experience of slaves.

Corruption, Anti-Corruption, Vigilance, and State Building from Early to Late Modern Times challenges current historiographical approaches, proposing new interpretations to rethink the relation between corruption and the socio-political and economic transformations since early globalisation. By adopting both transnational and long-term approaches, the book explores the historical dimension of notions such as accountability, transparency, and vigilance in their immediate political, social, and legal contexts. The starting point is to view corruption not as a moral category that emerged in 1789 to delegitimise past, foreign or present state systems, but as a constantly contested concept that must also be historicised in past societies. The collection revisits chronologies and examines different local, regional, and national frames, highlighting that the path to modernity was contested and affected by a variety of unique circumstances, such as revolutions and external political powers. Laughter and Narrative in the Later Middle Ages
In contrast to the vernacular literary traditions of France, Italy and England, comic tales in verse flourished in late medieval Germany, providing bawdy entertainment for larger audiences of public recitals as well as for smaller numbers of individual readers. In a sustained close analysis Sebastian Coxon explores both the narrative design and fundamental thematic preoccupations of these short texts. A distinctively performative tradition of pre-modern narrative literature emerges which invited its recipients to think, learn and above all to laugh in a number of different ways.

Thema des Bandes ist die Kontinuität antiker Traditionen in der europäischen Literatur des Mittelalters und der Neuzeit. Ein Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf der produktiven Aufnahme und Weiterentwicklung mythologischer Stoffe in verschiedenen nationalsprachlichen Literaturen Europas, ein weiterer auf der ideengeschichtlichen und literarischen Tradition, insbesondere auf Fragen der Poetologie und Ästhetik sowie der Aufnahme von Gattungsmustern. Dabei wird nachgezeichnet, in welchen Formen die Antike auf die Literatur des Mittelalters und der Neuzeit einwirkte. Die leitende Frage gilt der Konstitution, Vergewisserung oder auch Neubestimmung der eigenen Identität in der bewussten und produktiven Auseinandersetzung mit dem antiken Erbe.
