Two essential components of solar energy which are derivable from the sun-radiant light (passive solar power) and heat (active solar powers) have been harnessed for decades using a range of continuously-evolving and cutting-edge technologies. Such technologies include solar heating, solar photovoltaics, solar thermal energy, solar architecture and photo emitters. Recently, there has been active research in solar energy resources due to improvements in solar panel geometry, photo-cell materials, glazing and panel orientation. Equally, more rigorous methods of modeling inter-reflections within curvilinear surfaces are now being evaluated for simplified analytical evaluations. Therefore, this book, Solar Radiation Applications, presents the outcomes of selective and classic works on the optimization of these essential fields in active solar energy research.
The role of lighting is developing into a topic considered alongside sustainable development. Some years ago, lighting installations fulfilled technical requirements and consumed only enough energy for the accurate completion of visual tasks. This recently changed due to several discoveries in the matter of non-visual paths, whose influence on users' well-being, safety, mood, and productivity is starting to be applied to installations. Today, we know that sustainable development depends on many factors but we are only now beginning to understand how accurate lighting can be used to promote development from different perspectives. The present book compiles work dealing with the way lighting installations must be designed to work in an efficient and sustainable way, together with the way lighting can be used to contribute to sustainable development beyond the well-know savings in energy, green-house gas emissions, and raw materials consumption. The union of both concepts, sustainable lighting and lighting for sustainability is what is call "total lighting", the global framework with which the lighting community will work in the near future.
The architectural community has had a strong and continuing interest in traditional and vernacular architecture. Lessons from Vernacular Architecture takes lessons directly from traditional and vernacular architecture and offers them to the reader as guidance and inspiration for new buildings. The appropriate technical and social solutions provided by vernacular and traditional architecture are analysed in detail. This is the second volume of BUILDING 2000, a pilot project of the Commission's R&D programme 'Solar Energy Applications to Buildings' with the purpose of encouraging the adoption of solar architecture in large buildings. In a first volume, a similar series of studies is presented for the building categories: SCHOOLS, LABORATORIES and UNIVERSITIES, and SPORTS AND EDUCATIONAL CENTRES.
