Legenda Christiani and Modern Historiography
Legenda Christiani and Modern Historiography focuses on the long history of the discussion over the authenticity of Legenda Christiani, a crucial text for the medieval history of the Czech lands. First, this study shows the birth and development of a critical historiography in the era of nationalism (19th-20th C.). Second, it explains the different textual strategies used by historiography in the modern era. Third, comparison with similar discussions about the consistency in or the age of medieval texts is offered. This book presents a collection of twelve seminal essays by Czech historians on the history of the Czech lands from the fifteenth through seventeenth centuries, which originally appeared in Czech publications as articles and book chapters and are translated here for the first time in English. The essays address a broad range of topics, including politics, religion, demography, everyday life, crime, and rural and urban society. By bringing to English-speaking readers the rich history and historical writing of the Czech lands through the lens of Czech historians, the book seeks to expand knowledge about the place of these lands in late medieval and early modern Europe, and the rich mosaic and shared history of the peoples and cultures of Europe.

Popularita a produkce dějepisných atlasů v Evropě stoupala zejména od poloviny 19. století. Zdánlivě nezaujatá díla mapující minulost však mnohdy výrazně otiskovala aktuální politickou situaci a názorové proměny společnosti, což z nich činí cenný historický pramen. Kniha se zaměřuje na dějepisné atlasy ve středoevropském prostoru v období 1848–1989, s důrazem na česká a československá díla, která dosud nebyla podrobněji zkoumána. Komplexní analýza atlasové produkce (včetně soudobé reflexe děl, jejich společenského významu i ideologického zneužití) umožňuje formulovat základní typologii a trendy atlasové produkce, odhaluje nečekané paralely i regionální specifika a poskytuje nový pohled na vývoj historické kartografie ve střední Evropě.
