Atlantic Salmon Ecology

The Atlantic salmon is one of the most prized and exploited species worldwide, being at the centre of a massive sports fishing industry and increasingly as the major farmed species in many countries worldwide. Atlantic Salmon Ecology is a landmark publication, both scientifically important and visually attractive. Comprehensively covering all major aspects of the relationship of the Atlantic salmon with its environment, chapters include details of migration and dispersal, reproduction, habitat requirements, feeding, growth rates, competition, predation, parasitsm, population dynamics, effects of landscape use, hydro power development, climate change, and exploitation. The book closes with a ...

From the third international workshop on the subject (U. of Florence, 1997), come 18 papers reviewing the issue of alien crayfish decimating the relatively few native species in European freshwater environments. In a historical and taxonomic context, the initial paper explains why such homogenizatio

By the year 2000, the world had built more than 45,000 large dams to irrigate crops, generate power, control floods in wet times and store water in dry times. Yet, in the last century, large dams also disrupted the ecology of half the world's rivers, displaced tens of millions of people from their homes and left nations burdened with debt. Their impacts have inevitably generated growing controversy and conflicts. Resolving their role in meeting water and energy needs is vital for the future and illustrates the complex development challenges that face our societies. The Report of the World Commission on Dams: - is the product of an unprecedented global public policy effort to bring government...

Globio

GLOBIO is an attempt to provide scientifically based information about the consequences of decisions for the future of biodiversity, sustainable development, and local cultures. It examines the potential consequences of different scenarios of infrastructure development in the coming decades, focusing on the Arctic region, and demonstrates how GLOBIO can be used as a supplement to traditional wildlife biology and landscape ecology approaches. This report lacks a subject index. c. Book News Inc.

The Atna River

This volume presents a unique set of time series data concerning the environmental and biological dynamics of a pristine alpine-boreal river system in Norway. A simultaneous collection of data on climate, hydrology, erosion, water chemistry, primary production, invertebrates and fish provides an unusual insight into the ecology of a watercourse characteristic of this region of north-western Europe. Individual papers present data collected over 14 years, which provides an opportunity to understand the natural dynamics in a system with very little direct influence from human activities. The results indicate a level of variation that should be expected in natural systems, and provides a solid basis for a discussion of the best approach to the monitoring of biological diversity and environmental factors in rivers and lakes. The volume is aimed at researchers working with watershed management and aquatic sciences. It provides useful information and experiences of particular relevance to the implementation of the EU Frame Directive for Water.

Freshwater Crayfish Aquaculture in North America, Europe, and Australia is the first text to summarize the methods of culture for the eight most important crayfish species in the world. Methods developed to culture crayfishes around the world differ significantly, and this book enables readers to develop workable strategies for cultivating different crayfish species in specific environments. Huner and associate authors cover the following topics in detail: methods of crayfish culture crayfish diseases crayfish processing economics of crayfish culture Each of the the three major crayfish industries are well-represented in this new book and special attention is given to the specific needs and ...
