The Politics of Negative Emotions
Negative emotions, including anger, fear, and shame, have been at the heart of recent political events, such as the protests against COVID-19 restrictions. These negative emotions can be politically destructive, leading people to act rashly without due concern for democratic principles. However, they can also accurately signal wrongdoing and motivate acts to redress the situation, as displayed in the Black Lives Matter and climate change movements. This volume brings together perspectives from political science and philosophy to shed new light on the political faces of negative emotions. Engaging with real-world political events from Europe, the US, and Africa, contributors critically evaluate much-discussed emotions, such as anger and fear, but also less prominent ones, such as frustration and discomfort.
The Wolves are Coming Back
The wolves are returning to Germany, while German politics are shifting to the right. The rising nationalist Alternative for Germany (AfD) draw much of their support from places that have been referred to as the 'post-traumatic places' in East Germany, structured by realities of disownment, disenfranchisement, and a lack of democratic infrastructure. While nationalist parties are on the rise everywhere in Europe, this is a case study of East German fringe political movements, splinter parties, and agitation against both migrants and wolves. The authors move beyond easy stereotypes and strive to unravel the deep story of why East German politics is shifting to the right. The returning wolves serve both as metaphor and analytical tool to further an understanding of the logics and sentiments that underlie the rise of the right in East German politics.

Policing race, ethnicity and culture
How to deal with differences based on culture, ethnicity and race, has become a key issue of policing. This edited collected explores everyday, often mundane interactions between police officers and migrantised actors in European countries and asks how both sides deal with perceived differences. The contributions reflect that such differences are not just ‘out there’ but are being situationally (re-)produced in police-citizen encounters. By taking a comparative approach, the book develops a distinctly European perspective on these questions. The book contains 12 ethnographies from ten European countries, based on new and often innovative empirical research, two theoretical contributions, an introduction and a postface.

Gibt es eine ostdeutsche Identität? Bezeichnet „ostdeutsch“ analytisch treffend spezifische Lebensumstände oder ist sie eine politische Erfindung? Der Band informiert hierzu aus wissenschaftlicher Sicht. Politikwissenschaftliche, soziologische, wirtschafts- und finanzwissenschaftliche Beiträge untersuchen dies z.B. anhand der Wirtschaftskraft, des Wahlverhaltens, der Parteien, der Zivilgesellschaft, von Bürgerdialogen, Demokratieförderprogrammen oder Elitenbildern. Die Analysen zeigen Ostdeutschland und ostdeutsch als weiterhin sinnvolle analytische Kategorien, die auch gesamtdeutsche Entwicklungen zu verstehen helfen. Zwar ist ein Teil von Ost-West-Unterschieden auf feingliedrigere soziale und regionale Differenzen zurückzuführen (Kompositionseffekte). Dennoch verbleiben auch unter Berücksichtigung dieser Merkmale genuine Besonderheiten Ostdeutschlands (Kontexteffekte). Vor diesem Hintergrund bildet Ostdeutschland eine sozial relevante Lebenswelt und ein kontroverses Identitätsangebot.

Representing Vulnerabilities in Contemporary Literature
Representing Vulnerabilities in Contemporary Literature includes a collection of essays exploring the ways in which recent literary representations of vulnerability may problematize its visibilization from an ethical and aesthetic perspective. Recent technological and scientific developments have accentuated human vulnerability in many and different ways at a cross-national, and even cross-species level. Disability, technological, and ecological vulnerabilities are new foci of interest that add up to gender, precarity and trauma, among others, as forms of vulnerability in this volume. The literary visualization of these vulnerabilities might help raise social awareness of one’s own vulnerabilities as well as those of others so as to bring about global solidarity based on affinity and affect. However, the literary representation of forms of vulnerability might also deepen stigmatization phenomena and trivialize the spectacularization of vulnerability by blunting readers’ affective response towards those products that strive to hold their attention and interest in an information-saturated, global entertainment market.
