Blacksmiths of Ilamba

This study analyzes the establishment of an iron foundry in the interior 18th-century of Angola. It was a fruit of the Portuguese Enlightenment, which encouraged investment in manufacturing, particularly of iron, a metal indispensable for military and technological purposes. However, the plans faced the resistance of African blacksmiths and founders who refused to learn foreign techniques and work processes. By emphasizing Central African agency, the book highlights the successful strategies of historical actors who scholars have largely ignored. Based upon a wide variety of sources from Brazilian, Portuguese, and Angolan archives, the book reconstructs how Africans were taken to work at the...

African Heritage and Memories of Slavery in Brazil and the South Atlantic World

This book explores the history of African tangible and intangible heritages and its links with the public memory of slavery in Brazil and Angola. The two countries are deeply connected, given how most enslaved Africans, forcibly brought to Brazil during the era of the Atlantic slave trade, were from West Central Africa. Brazil imported the largest number of enslaved Africans during the Atlantic slave trade and was the last country in the western hemisphere to abolish slavery in 1888. Today, other than Nigeria, the largest population of African descent is in Brazil. Yet it was only in the last twenty years that Brazil's African heritage and its slave past have gained greater visibility. Prior...

The first book to feature Jacob Lawrence's Nigeria series, this richly illustrated volume also highlights Africa's place as a global center of modernist art and culture This revelatory book shines a light on the understudied but important influence of African Modernism on the work of Black American artist Jacob Lawrence (1917-2000). In 1965, a New York gallery displayed Lawrence's Nigeria series: eight tempera paintings of Lagos and Ibadan marketplaces that were the culmination of an eight-month stay in Nigeria. Regional strategy and action plan for the prevention, preparedness, response and recovery of Latin America and the Caribbean to Fusarium wilt of Musaceae tropical race 4

The countries of Latin America and the Caribbean are immersed in the difficult task of recovering our agrifood systems hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. In this complex situation, tropical race 4 of the Musaceae fusarium wilt is undoubtedly the greatest challenge facing the banana and plantain agribusiness in our region. However, this context also constitutes an opportunity to encourage the development and introduction of innovations that strengthen biosecurity at different levels, the best crop and soil management practices and alternatives for the recovery of the affected countries. It is also necessary to comprehensively address the strengthening of the institutional framework related to pest management, the co-responsibility of the private sector, public-private collaboration and the involvement of society as a whole. With this document, FAO strengthens its commitment to continue supporting governments and contributing to agricultural sustainability, while increasing the resilience of the sector and livelihoods in the region.
