More than eighty designs--iconic, archaic, quotidian, and taboo--that have defined the arc of human reproduction. While birth often brings great joy, making babies is a knotty enterprise. The designed objects that surround us when it comes to menstruation, birth control, conception, pregnancy, childbirth, and early motherhood vary as oddly, messily, and dramatically as the stereotypes suggest. This smart, image-rich, fashion-forward, and design-driven book explores more than eighty designs--iconic, conceptual, archaic, titillating, emotionally charged, or just plain strange--that have defined the relationships between people and babies during the past century. Each object tells a story. In s...

Sami Art and Aesthetics

  • Categories: Art

During the last five decades we have witnessed an increase in activity among artists identifying themselves as Sami, the only recognised indigenous people of Scandinavia. At the same time, art and duodji (traditional Sami art and craft) have been organized and institutionalized, not least by the Sami artists themselves. Sami Art and Aesthetics discusses and highlights these developments and places them in historical and contemporary contexts for an international audience. At stake are complex, changing terms regarding the creative and the political agencies. The question is not how indigeneity, identity, people, art, duodji, and aesthetics correspond to conventional Western ideas, rather it is how they interact with the Sami and their neighbouring cultures and societies. The volume is written by some of the foremost art historians and literary scholars in Sami art, craft, architecture, culture, and indigenous studies. Artists presented include Johan Turi, Ivar Jaks, Outi Pieski, Folke Fjellstrom, Katarina Pirak Sikku, Geir Tore Holm, and Silje Figenschou Thoresen.

Anton Alvarez

Anton Alvarez

Swedish-Chilean designer Anton Alvarez has developed a machine that spins thousands of meters of brightly colored thread around pieces of wood and metal to join them, producing solid benches, stools, lamps and monumental sculptures without traditional joints of any kind. A well illustrated publication on the Stockholm-based designer, featuring hundreds of photographs, traces the process and evolution of his thread-wrapping technique. Alvarezs work, a mixture of his native Chilean roots and the minimal lines of European design, focuses on the systems and the creation of tools that enable the construction of these fascinating pieces. Recognized and exhibited internationally, Alvarez has shown at MUDAC, Switzerland, the Design Museum and Victoria & Albert Museum, London. Through photos, interviews and essays, this unique construction method unfolds. Essay by UglyCute founder Andreas N obel and foreword by legendary British artist and curator Richard Wentworth.

Initiated by Swedish artist Anna Lundh, Visions of the Now is a reconsideration of the 1966 Stockholm festival Visioner av Nuet (Visions of the Present), which aimed to examine the impact of technology on humanity, society, and art; half a century later, we are immersed in the technology that was still “new” in 1966. Lundh's project took place in 2013 and brought together international artists, musicians, theorists, and scientists for a three-day festival of lectures, panels, performances, sound pieces, installations, and screenings. What, it asked, are our current visions of the now, and how do we imagine the future? This two-volume set marks the fiftieth anniversary of Visioner av Nuet...
