Action on Poverty in the UK

This book tackles poverty and policy issues in the UK by discussing successful projects and practices, across lots of short chapters. The first section provides a brief history overview of poverty in the UK over the past two hundred years and discusses the question of why the UK, as a wealthy western nation, still has a poverty issue. It discusses various vulnerable groups and contextual factors which lead to these inequalities. The second section articulates what anti-poverty work is and shares project examples from across the country where anti-poverty workers are supporting people to survive and then to thrive. Lived experiences voices are articulated to present examples of poverty being experienced. This book draws on academic and practitioner work and aims to equip the activist and inform the student, academic and policy maker.

To a Dark Place

To a Dark Place

Between 1969 and 1998, over 4,000 people lost their lives in the small country of Northern Ireland. The vast majority of these deaths were sectarian in nature and involved ordinary civilians, killed by the various paramilitary groups. These organisations murdered freely and without remorse, considering life a cheap price to pay in the furtherance of their cause. The words 'Why us?' were uttered by many families whose lives were ripped asunder by The Troubles. Thousands of innocents received a life sentence at the hands of the terrorists; these, then, are their words, the words of those who survived such attacks, and of those left behind. These poignant and tragic stories come from the people who have been forced to live with the emotional shrapnel of terrorism.

Julie's Deadly Wishes

Julie Corns felt trapped in her dull, boring life in Portsmouth, Ohio. That was until the day that Julie and her sister Shannon Wright stumbled upon an old mahogany mirror while they were cleaning out their deceased mom's basement. The mirror was originally owned by their great-great grandmother Emily, in 1920. Hidden inside a secret compartment, was Emily's diary and a three-pearl necklace on a leather cord. The necklace was powerful and could grant three wishes, one for each pearl, but it came with a warning that the mirror would own your soul after the third wish. Julie was desperate to change her life, and despite what was written in the diary and the warning from her psychic friend Charlotte, Julie made her wish. Julie's first wish came true making her appearance and life drastically change. So much so, that her old friend Irma Rios felt like someone else has taken Julie's place, but who? They decided to go to Lake Charles, Louisiana, and it was there that the new Julie emerged unleashing horror to whatever man crossed her path. If you had three wishes, what would you wish for?

True Survival Tales

Struck by lightning. Charged by a grizzly. Swept into an ice cave. Lost and alone. Over our 40-year history, BACKPACKER readers have been obsessed with survival stories. On a visceral level, they’re dramatic, compelling reads. But even more importantly, survival tales have the power to inform us and move us deeply, cutting to the core of the human struggle. Almost 100 years later, it’s still a thrill to read about Ernest Shackleton and the crew of the Endurance’s death-defying Antarctic struggle, or the Donner party’s ill-fated journey through the Sierra Nevada Mountains. We’re still captivated by the tenacity, innovation, and grit that survivors of all stripes show in making it ho...

Haven't you ever wondered where time comes from, or what it's made of? Does it go on endlessly, or is there just a certain amount of it, like grains of sand in an egg timer? Is every bit of time the same as every other, or are there different types here and there? Why do some people struggle to cope if they have too much time, whilst others never seem to be able to find enough? What if time works differently for some people? People like Timothy Swift, for instance. He's always trying to find some time, to make time, to buy a little time...because he always has too much to do, and never enough time to do it in.But the funny thing is, no matter how little time Timothy has, he somehow gets everything done. And, remarkably, even when he doesn't have a single moment to spare, he can almost always find enough time do one more thing. And what about dreams? Does time work the same in dreams?

This volume considers the complex relationships that exist between Christianity, rape culture, and gender violence. Each chapter explores the various roles that Christian theologies, teachings, and practices have played in shaping contemporary understandings of gender violence and in sanctioning rape-supportive cultural belief systems and practices. Our contributors explore this topic from a range of disciplinary perspectives, including theology, gender and queer studies, cultural studies, pastoral care, and counseling. Together, the chapters in this volume testify to the considerable influence that Christianity has had, and continues to have, in directing conversations within the Christian tradition around gender violence and rape culture. They therefore invite readers to engage fruitfully in these conversations, fostering transformative dialogues with the Christian community about our shared responsibility to tackle the current global crisis of gender violence.
