Non-thermal (cold) plasmas at atmospheric pressure have recently found many breakthrough applications in biology, medicine, and food security. Plasmas can efficiently kill bacteria, yeasts, moulds, spores, biofilms and other hazardous microorganisms, including potential bio-terrorism agents. They can be employed for bio-decontamination and sterilization of surfaces, medical instruments, water, air, food, even of living tissues without causing their damage. The sixth session of the Subcommittee on Fish Trade was held in Bremen, Germany, from June 3-6, 1998. The subcommittee took note of recent events concerning international trade in fishery products and considered specific issues of international trade, environment and sustainable fisheries development: exploitation of fishery resources; fisheries management and subsidies; sustainable shrimp aquaculture; biotechnology developments; and trade in fisheries services.--Publisher's description.

The book covers the process of planning and conducting fish surveys in freshwater, describes the available practical methods for sampling and analysing, and provides some examples of statistical treatments, with considerations and conclusions based on these. The twentieth session of the European Inland Fisheries Advisory Commission (EIFAC) was held in Praia do Carvoeiro, Portugal, from June 23 to July 1, 1998, in concomitance with a symposium on water for sustainable inland fisheries and aquaculture. The session reviewed EIFAC's activities since 1996 in the fields of fishery biology and management, aquaculture, protection of the aquatic resource, and social and economic issues. EIFAC revised its rules of procedure and decided its future program of work, and in particular the activities which should be carried out until the next session of the Commission in 2000, planned to be held in Hungary and preceded by a symposium on fisheries and society.--Publisher's description.
This proceedings contains papers presented at the 5th International Conference on Applied Electrostatics held in Shanghai, China on November 2--5,2004. The ICAES 2004 Conference is of wide interest, as is shown by the contributions received from 11 countries and districts throughout the world. About 90 researchers attend the conference and more than 100 papers were submitted for presentation in the proceedings. The paper sessions covered following topics: - fundamentals and physics - applications (precipitation, pollution control, spray, separation, material, Ozone, etc.) - hazards and problems - biology technology - electrets - measuring technology - electromagnetic compatibility and others These papers demonstrated recent research level and developing trends of the entire electrostatic field.
The Committee agreed to establish a Sub-Committee on Aquaculture and adopted the International Plan of Action to Prevent, Deter and Eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IPOA-IUU) Fishing. It agreed that future reporting on the implementation of the Code of Conduct and related IPOAs should be based on in-depth analysis of problems associated with their efficient implementation, using case studies.
Metamorphosis and the transition from larvae or embryos to juveniles in fishes are important in order to answer, for example, questions about: (1) life-history styles and their modifications in evolutionary perspective and within current environmental demands; (2) the development and application of fisheries recruitment models, (3) the use of ontogenetic scales for interspecific comparisons, (4) the identification of ontogenetic shifts in resource use, and (5) the discovery of evolutionary interrelationships of species or genera.
