Over and Over and Over Again

  • Categories: Art

Over the last twenty years, reenactment has been appropriated by both contemporary artistic production and art-theoretical discourse, becoming a distinctive strategy to engage with history and memory. As a critical act of repetition, which is never neutral in reactualizing the past, it has established unconventional modes of historicization and narration. Collecting work by artists, scholars, curators, and museum administrators, the volume investigates reenactment's potential for a (re)activation of layered temporal experiences, and its value as an ongoing interpretative and political gesture performed in the present with an eye to the future. Its contributions discuss the mobilization of archives in the struggle for inclusiveness and cultural revisionism; the role of the body in the presentification and rehabilitation of past events and (impermanent) objects; the question of authenticity and originality in artistic practice, art history, as well as in museum collections and conservation practices.

While currently identitarian ideologies and essentialist notions of identity that tend to simplify and reduce life experience to simple factors are globally regaining massive attention, it becomes inevitable to recollect the thorough discussions of identity concepts of the past three decades. It also calls for an ever keener awareness of and capacity to deal with the complexity and diversity of the world we live in. Artists play a major role in the potential reflection and transformation of perceptions and conceptions of the world – musicians, dancers, choreographers, spoken word artists, performance artists, actors, also fine art, installation, media artists or photographers alike. “Per...

Humor in Global Contemporary Art

  • Categories: Art

Pursuing a new and timely line of research in world art studies, Humor in Global Contemporary Art is the first edited collection to examine the role of culturally specific humor in contemporary art from a global perspective. Since the 1960s, increasing numbers of artists from around the world have applied humor as a tool for observation, critique, transformation, and debate. Exploring how humorous art produced over the past six decades is anchored in local sociopolitical contexts and translated or misconstrued when exhibited abroad, this book opens new conversations regarding the functioning of humor and the ways in which art travels across the globe. With contributions by an impressive arra...

"This book examines the place of women in art and literature from the 19th century to the present day, whether as artists, critics or collectors. It centers on the concept of the network, as a possible point of entry for women into cultural circles long seen as male territories. Within the framework of feminist history and gender studies, the book looks at the careers of salonnires, gallery owners, editors and all types of artists, in Europe and in the USA. They may be famous (Carolee Schneemann) or less so (Yvonne Serruys), they may or may not have been openly feminist, but they have all used networking as a strategy to defend their artistic choices or their vision of the world, as well as to help and support one another."

Acts of Transgression

  • Categories: Art

Fifteen writers explore the experimental, interdisciplinary and radically transgressive field of contemporary live art in South Africa, focusing on a wide range of perspectives, personalities and theoretical concerns Contemporary South African society is chronologically ‘post’ apartheid, but it continues to grapple with material redress, land redistribution and systemic racism. Acts of Transgression represents the complexity of this moment in the rich potential of a performative art form that transcends disciplinary boundaries and aesthetic conventions. The contributors, who are all significantly involved in the discipline of performance art, probe its intersection with crisis and socio-...

This publication emerges from Uriel Orlow's Theatrum Botanicum (2015-18), a multi-faceted project encompassing film, sound, photography, and installation, which looks to the botanical world as a stage for politics. Working from the dual vantage points of South Africa and Europe, the project considers plants as both witnesses to, and dynamic agents in, history. It links nature and humans, rural and cosmopolitan medicine, tradition and modernity across different geographies, histories, and systems of knowledge--exploring the variety of curative, spiritual, and economic powers of plants. The project addresses "botanical nationalism" and "flower diplomacy" during apartheid; plant migration; the ...

Beyond the Black Atlantic

A groundswell of complex events around the globe have made discussion surrounding the Western Eurocentric, often prejudiced notion of ?Blackness± even more relevant and controversial in recent years. Social conflicts in Western societies that were long thought to have been overcome ? such as those in the United States, for example ? have sparked new awareness among members of the Black community and simultaneously brought the idea of a global, polyphonic Black culture (the ?Black Atlantic±) to the fore. Coined in the year 1993 by British sociologist Paul Gilroy his book ?The Black Atlantic: Modernity and Double-Consciousness± is considered a key work of contemporary research on the cultur...
