Social Policy and Social Work
The present social policy and social work are facing with and challenging the process of rapid change in all aspects of social life: economic, cultural and political. The globalising capitalistic economy is considered to be the main cause of this process and it is made responsible for reduction of the public sphere, for the demise of the welfare state, for growing poverty and social inequalities, for damage of the local communities and families, for degradation of the environment. There is no doubt social policy and social work has to rise to these challenges. This volume contains some interesting contributions to this question provided by international experts.

In this thought-provoking book the contributors delve deeply into the everyday lives of poor households to see which practices and resources they apply to improve their situations. One of the book’s key findings is that social resilience requires a functioning welfare state operating at an increased level. In addition to sufficient welfare transfers, there is a need for low-commodified common goods to be made available not only for the registered poor but all low-income households.

The Making of Regions in Post-Socialist Europe — the Impact of Culture, Economic Structure and Institutions
The study combines the debate on regionalisation with transformation research. It regards the formation of regional actors and institutions not primarily from the perspective of formal organisational structures, but also a consequence of the macro-political transformation regime and region-specific opportunity structures. These structures include evonomic restrictions, historical legacies and cultural resources that are conveyed in present informal mechanisms, personal networks, discourses, and development strategies. The qualitative empirical approach offers a vivid picture of regional developments. The two volumes cover Malopolska and Silesia (Poland), Hajdu-Bihar County (Hungary), Timis County (Romania), and the L'viv and Donetsk regions (Ukraine).
